Windows 8 Upgrade: What You Should Know

Windows 8 Upgrade: What You Should Know

A lot of you might be planning on upgrading to the latest operating system but not purchase a new computer to complement it. It is good to know that Microsoft has come up with the means to upgrade with less hassles. Before you make that big switch, here are important things that you may want to know.

Upgrade Cost

The Windows 8 Pro can be downloaded as long as your PC has the Windows 7, Windows Vista or the Windows XP. If your computer was purchased with the following operating system versions before the 2nd of June this year, the download from the Microsoft website would cost you $39.99. On the other hand, if you purchased a PC without the Windows 8 OS from the 2nd of June until the 31st of January 2013, then the download to upgrade from the official website would only cost $14.99. The cost is made lower for new computer purchases most probably to avoid preemption of the official drop off date for the Windows 8.

Upgrade Versions

Computer owners can purchase the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade box for $69.99. For consumers, the only available upgrades would be the regular Windows 8 and the Windows 8 Pro. The Windows RT (Runtime) would be available for tablets and the Windows 8 Enterprise for corporate computers, which are of course large-volume purchases. All of the versions would come in 32 and 64-bit editions. There has not been any announcement from Microsoft regarding a vanilla Windows 8 upgrade.

Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro

There is a little difference between the Windows 8 and the Windows 8 Pro. In general the Pro edition would have features designed for technical and business professionals most home users would probably not use. Some of the additional features in the Pro edition are the disk encryption tool, BitLocker and the virtualization software, Client Hyper-V. But one feature that does not come with both editions is Microsoft’s home theatre software, Windows Media Center which comes with codecs for a DVD movie player. Although, Pro edition users can download it at no cost after the upgrade. For Windows 8 users, they can upgrade to the Pro edition and the Media Center would be included in the pack. But so far, there has not been any announcement as to how much that certain upgrade would cost.

Hardware Requirements

The minimum hardware requirements for a Windows 8 are: 1Ghz processor, 1GB of a 32-bit RAM or alternatively a 2GB for a 64-bit, 16GB of free hard-disk space for a 32-bit and 20GB for a 64-bit and a graphics device DirectX 9 with a WDDM 1.0 driver.

Microsoft also explained that the minimum required screen resolution is 1024 by 768 to accommodate the applications styled in “Metro” and 1366 by 768 for its “Snap” feature. The “Snap” feature allows the automatic positioning and resizing of an application using the drag motion. Microsoft is also suggesting to coin the interface design of the Windows 8 as “Windows 8-style UI” or “Modern UI” instead of “Metro UI” before an official name goes along with the OS release on October 26.

Files and Settings Migration

Microsoft also announced that migration of your old system settings and files would depend on the Windows OS version that you are using. Consumers with the Windows 7 need not worry as an upgrade to Windows 8 would migrate all your system settings, applications and personal files. For computer owners with Windows Vista, both personal files and Windows settings would be brought along with the upgrade. However, Windows XP users would have to deal with just having their personal files migrated to the new Windows OS.

Hardware and Software Compatibility

Some people are also asking if there would be issues with old software and hardware if an upgrade to the Windows 8 is implemented. To give you a heads up, if you have the Windows XP or the Windows Vista, some applications would have to be re-installed. On the other hand, Windows 7 users need not worry that much, as most programs on the predecessor of the Windows 8 would work as soon as the upgrade is finished. Microsoft has put up a website to check if specific hardware devices and applications are certified to function smoothly in the new operating system. Aside from this, prior to actually installing the upgrade, a compatibility report would be generated for you to check and begin considering what to keep and reinstall or simply disregard migration.

There is barely a month left before Microsoft officially announces the release of Windows 8 and even before that happens, computer owners have mixed impressions about the new OS. Some are positively excited while others are wary. No one can tell what would Windows 8 exactly bring and change to how people use their computers but whatever that is, you know that you are somehow armed with the basics.

Windows 8. proprietary software garbage that regulates what you can do with your computer, pay per view features, DRM which is the feature of not working to shackle users to a particular company, and basically putting digital handcuffs on the user, which is exactly the idea behind Microsoft Windows. Windows is non-free software that restricts you, and enslaves you.

Its 2012. These corporate control mechanisms are no longer needed. Microsoft, and the owner of this article will brainwash you otherwise of course.

Freedom is an important social value of computer software. Without it, companies will open backdoors to your computer and do as they please because they assume you are too stupid to care or notice. This abuse of power eventually grows to the point of abusing the user.

Many people still do not know this, but you do have choice due to the hard work of many people around the world who contribute to the Linux kernel, and its large subset of free software that supports its use. You can load the software from the link below into your computer in around 20 to 30 minutes and experience an elegant operating system that allows for freedom, choice, greater security, and ease of use. Free. Or you can locate a knowledgeable tech person, and have them help you load it for a small fee, or even for free if they are a friend.
