PTC Releases 2014 State of the Industry Report
This year’s State of the Industry Report compares three years of data for each of six main technology industry clusters for 2012, the latest year for which complete data was available. Each of the six industry clusters experienced positive employment growth.
The exceptional performers, however, were information technology, environmental technology, advanced manufacturing and energy technology, with double-digit advances in either total annual payroll, average wages or both. Southwestern Pennsylvania counties in the Pittsburgh region tracked for this report include Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Butler, Cambria, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland.
Results for this year’s report may be inconsistent with previous years, due to NAICS code definition changes that occurred for years 2007 through 2010. Highlights include:
> The 10,191 technology establishments tallied in the year 2012 represent more than 13 percent of all companies in the 13-county region.
> These firms employ 295,557 individuals and account for more than 23 percent of the area’s overall workforce.
> The $20.7 billion annual payroll of technology and related companies represents more than 34 percent of the region’s total wages, the highest it has ever been since this report began publishing in 1999.
