Herring and tarpon trace back to Devonian Cheirolepis
Short one today
as the graphic (Fig 1) tells the tale. Note the scale bars on this tiny-to-large clade beginning with Early to Middle Devonian Cheirolepis then Middle Triassic Leptolepis.

The mobile mouth parts
of clade members trace their origins back to basal conodontomorphs, like Late Ordovician Promissum. So, that’s a primitive trait with early origins. Earlier the LRT separated bony fish into two clades more basic than ray fin vs lobe fin: those derived from conodonts vs those derived from placoderms.
Editors note: since those earlier postings several fish have switched sides in the current version of the LRT in an unenviable process of sorting through convergence, trying to reduce the number of MPTs while seeking to model actual evolutionary events that make sense all by trait analysis, not genomics. Many mistakes made along the way as the number of corrections continues to rise.
If anyone can identify
with a museum number the fish in figure 1 labeled ‘not Pholidophorus‘, I’d be grateful to receive that data.
