Possible Fossil Wood Cells in the Tissint Meteorite: Refuting an Abiotic Interpretation
Figure 1. Wood cell structures in the Tissint meteorite, described at
A recurring claim from mainstream planetary geologists is that cell-like polygonal patterns in the Tissint meteorite can be fully explained by abiotic processes such as grain boundaries or shock fractures. This article challenges that view and argues these structures are more plausibly fossil wood cells, preserved despite impact and melt, with features unmatched by known abiotic analogs.
Main Text
The observed structures show a repeating, ordered arrangement of polygonal “cells” with mostly uniform size. Distinct walls separate each “cell,” with angular to rounded edges consistent with fossilized tracheids or vessel elements in wood. While polygonal fracture networks exist in igneous minerals like olivine, they do not form consistent, honeycomb-like patterns across large areas.
Crystal boundaries in basalts form under high temperatures during cooling, producing grains with triple junctions but lack uniform repeating units over such areas. The repeating size and spacing here is far more regular than typical olivine or pyroxene textures.
If these “cells” formed during a shock melting event, they would have been obliterated or strongly deformed by high temperatures that melt veins reach. Instead, they appear intact and preserved within the mineral, consistent with carbonized woody tissue.
No known Martian or terrestrial meteorite thin section shows an abiotic texture exactly matching the scale, geometry, and consistent polygonal boundaries observed here. While more tests could strengthen the case, including Raman or isotopic studies, the visible evidence alone favors a fossil wood origin.
Key Takeaway
A purely abiotic interpretation of Tissint’s “wood cells” overlooks strong morphological evidence that aligns far better with fossilized plant tissue than with random geologic textures.
