Fish subset of the LRT updated

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The last few weeks have been spent
updating the fish subset of the the large reptile tree (LRT, 2340 taxa) . One major change. Otherwise just a clean-up. PAUP now runs for 4 seconds to produce 9 trees with no loss of resolution at major branch nodes. That’s pretty good (= not perfect) resolution for 505 taxa.

Some of the data comes from DGS photos. Other from drawings.

Biggest change
Conondotomorpha now produce (= evolve into) fewer taxa and that list no longer includes tetrapods. This clade still includes herring and anchovies, some extant deep water taxa and several fossil taxa. Now, over on the other side of the fish subset, the spiny shark, Homalacanthus (Fig 1) evolves into a different but convergent clade of ray-fins.

Figure 2. Sangiorgioichthys in situ and skull reconstructed in standard DGS colors.

Sangiorgioichthys
(Fig 2) is the last common ancestor of salmon and people who eat salmon – if this is indeed a valid hypothesis. Note the tiny ray-fin lateral fins and the heterocercal tail.

The LRT still needs to be tested with another similar taxon list. Anyone interested?

Betancur-R et al (seven co-authors) 2017. “Phylogenetic classification of bony fishes”BMC Evolutionary Biology17 (1):162. (this is a genomic study)

These authors reported, “The updated classification presented here is based on phylogenies inferred using molecular and genomic data for nearly 2000 fishes. This version of the phylogenetic classification of bony fishes is substantially improved, providing resolution for more taxa than previous versions, based on more densely sampled phylogenetic trees. The classification presented in this study represents, unlike any other, the most up-to-date hypothesis of the Tree of Life of fishes.”

No extinct = fossil fish could be tested.
