I'm fed up with the anti-net zero rhetoric
By Brian Clegg
At the moment I’m researching and writing a book called The Green Heretic, as a result of which I am reading a lot about the environment, both from scientific sources and from newspapers. The more right wing papers in the UK (not to mention certain US Twitter accounts) are scathing about Ed Miliband (the UK minister responsible for the environment) and his push for net zero.
As we sit sweltering in a series of heat waves with temperatures reaching 35°C and more, it’s hard to ignore the appeal of cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions, but most of the attacks on net zero treat the whole concept with contempt, referring to Miliband as a ‘zealot’ with an ‘obsessive drive’. While I do agree that his instance on buying in gas from other countries rather than using our own is illogical both economically and in terms of energy security, to attack the concept of net zero is equally lacking in any intellectual rigour.
You can argue about how we get from here to there, but it is very short sighted to totally ignore the realities of climate change and the need to take action to reduce our emissions. The biggest problem currently (which seems to sum up the Labour government as a whole) is the inability to take in the big picture.
It’s fine to push for more solar and wind, but we need better infrastructure to carry the power, for instance, from offshore wind farms off Scotland to England where it’s more needed. At the moment we are often having to pay wind farms not to generate because the connectors can’t cope. And more solar is great too – but with the two main renewable sources being highly variable, we need more backup from nuclear and more storage. And we have to have that in place before we burn our bridges on other sources.
By all means tell Mr Miliband to be better at seeing the big picture. But don’t knock net zero.
