Yaksha enters the LRT alongside Celtedens

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Previously known by its body and mandible in ventral view,
Yaksha, with its long hyoid (= ballistic tongue support) is a great match to only other albanerpetid in the LRT, Celtedens (Fig 1).

I was the last one to the party on this update.

Figure 1. At top µCT scanned image of Yaksha compared to prior image of Celtedens. Note the lack of a jugal (cyan blue) on Celtedens. Real? Or lost during taphonomy?

From the Wikipedia Yaksha page:
“The paratype specimen was originally described in 2016 amongst a collection of fossil lizard species from Burmese amber, and was initially identified as a stemchameleon. The paper describing Yaksha perettii was published in November 2020 in the journal Science. The adult skull is 12.18 millimetres (0.480 in) from front to back, with an estimated snout to pelvis length of around 5 centimetres.”

Thanks to reader, UT for bringing this to my attention.
Daza et al 2020 is how you report errors with better data at hand, in this case µCT scans.
Respect!

Figure 2. Yaksha skull in 3 views, non-standard DGS colors. Let’s standardize those skull colors so we don’t have to ALSO add labels. Note: the upper temporal fenestra and lateral temporal fenestrae, contiguous with the orbit. This represents a third diapsid skull configuration. Pink arrow points to hyoid = tongue bone. Compare to Celtedens in figure 1.

Diapsid skull configuration.
If you can see a pair of upper temporal fenestrae, and a pair of lateral temporal fenestrae (contiguous with the orbit, Figs 1, 2), then we have a third diapsid skull configuration by convergence.

Even so, this is a salamander close to frogs in the LRT.
PS for technical reasons unknown the LRT did not update last night.
