4. Required Tests

The competing interpretations could be tested through:

  1. additional MAHLI images under different illumination angles;

  2. three-dimensional reconstruction using focus stacks;

  3. comparison of brushed and unbrushed surfaces;

  4. compositional measurements of segments and adjacent matrix;

  5. quantitative analysis of widths, spacing, orientations, and terminations; and

  6. comparison with terrestrial structures reproducing the complete morphology at the same scale.

A valid geological analog must match the scale, segmentation, alignment, boundaries, and larger organization—not merely contain vaguely similar lines.

Conclusion

The Sol 4976 MAHLI image documents numerous segmented elements approximately 0.17–0.50 mm wide. Their repeated dimensions, local alignment, distinct boundaries, and incorporation into larger arrangements are not adequately explained by the geological mechanisms proposed so far.

Lamination does not account for repeated modular termination. Fracture filling does not explain the organized segmented pattern. Erosion may expose the structures but cannot create their underlying arrangement. DRT scratching does not readily produce bounded components embedded within a larger system.

The image alone cannot prove manufacture conclusively. Nevertheless, the artificial-structure hypothesis presently provides a more unified morphological explanation than the proposed geological alternatives. The structures should therefore be investigated as possible degraded remnants of an organized, potentially artificial material system on Mars rather than being classified automatically as ordinary rock texture.
