Rockin' rollin'... Cotswolds?
By Brian Clegg
The first thing that comes to mind when you mention the Cotswolds? Mellow stone houses. Pretty villages. Lots of tourists. Probably not 1950s rock and roll. But last night at the Barn Theatre in Cirencester the performance of Million Dollar Quartet was phenomenal.
This is described as a jukebox musical, set on the evening of 4th December 1956, when Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and the then-unknown Jerry Lee Lewis all ended up together, resulting in a remarkable recorded session. If you even vaguely like 50s music this is a remarkable evening with a whole host of hits including Blue Suede Shoes, Fever (performed by the fictional Dyanne), I Walk the Line, I Hear you Knockin’, Great Balls of Fire, See You Later Alligator and more (perhaps surprisingly with a semi-a cappella Down by the Riverside).
I say this is ‘described as’ a jukebox musical, but in most musical theatre you get the singers on stage and a band (or recording) out of sight. Here the seven musical stars (the above mentioned five plus a drummer and brilliant bass player) perform the whole thing. Darren Day does a good job pulling the drama side together as Sam Phillips, the studio’s owner. It’s a gig and a play rolled into one – and one of the best things I’ve seen in a theatre.
It runs to 22 August and tickets are still available. Be there or be square. If you can make it to Cirencester I would really recommend getting there. The show works ideally in the Barn, as the intimate setting is perfect to put you right in Sun Studios – but if you are more South East based, the same brilliant cast will be in the West End from 2 September.
The evening really did happen, though the track list from the real thing is rather less exciting, featuring as it did rather a lot of Christmas schmaltz. You can get a feel for that here:
