Where on Earth were the refugia during the aftermath of the asteroid impact?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

With widespread damages
over most of the planet Earth following in the wake of the asteroid impact(s) and Deccan Traps around 66mya, where did the surviving few plants and animals find refuge?

Refugia (singular: refugium) are geographic locations or habitats that support isolated populations of a once-widespread species. These areas remain relatively unchanged during periods of drastic environmental stress, such as ice ages, severe droughts, or human disturbance, allowing species to survive where they otherwise might go extinct.

Some authors hypothesize
it was the lack of teeth in birds, the submersibility of turtles and crocs, and the tunneling of mammals that saved them when everything was on fire, then charred into ruin and then plunged into darkness and cold.

The large non-avian dinosaurs did not have these survival traits.

IMHO
geography and latitude (Fig 1) might have played a more important part in the process of selective survival by providing rare places on the planet that were less affected by the fires, smoke, chilling temperatures, etc. These refugia might have been concentrated near the poles, away from the temperate and tropical impacts and thus away from circulating temperate and tropical weather patterns that spread the fire, smoke and later cold everywhere around the globe – everywhere, but the poles… perhaps.

At the poles, which were ice-free and temperate at the time (66mya), the flora and fauna were pre-adapted to long periods of darkness, as they both are today.

If there is a better = more parsimonious solution out there
we all would like to hear it.

Some animals and plants did survive – but how – and where?
