Becoming a grumpy old editor

By Brian Clegg

Listening to popular beat combos on the wireless, or noticing signs around me, I realise that I am increasingly becoming a grumpy old editor of what I hear and see.

For years I have cringed when I hear the Wings song Live and Let Die (I now put my fingers in my ears at the relevant points) when McCartney gets to the words ‘this ever changing world in which we live in’ – that repeated ‘in’ causes real pain.

More recently, having dipped into a sixties station, I found myself mentally telling off Susan Maughan when in Bobby’s Girl she repeatedly sings ‘If I was Bobby’s girl’. ‘No,’ I inwardly yell. ‘If I were Bobby’s girl!’

This, of course, doesn’t mean I don’t make my own errors. I’ve just had an edit back of a book I’ve written in which the editor points out that the spelling I’ve used for a word all my life is wrong. I thought it was ‘propellor’ but actually it’s ‘propeller’.

But the fact that I can slip up too doesn’t mean I’ll stop mentally editing what I hear and see. I regularly find myself yelling ‘French windows!’at the TV when someone says ‘French doors.’

Most recently, in the M&S café (I know how to live), I spotted a set of signs over self-service shelves. They said things like HOT, NEEDS HEATING, SANDWICHES… So far, so good. But the final one said KIDS. Now, unless they were trying to satisfy the relatively limited cannibal segment of the market, this surely should have been either FOR KIDS, or if they wanted to be sly KIDS’ with a delightful apostrophe and an implied FOOD.

For that matter, don’t get me started on Halloween being a single day, not a season. I’m looking forward to getting closer to Christmas, so I can start saying ‘Bah, humbug’ once more.
