Synapsid canine evolution in one cherry-picked graphic

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Canines are cool. Popular. Fascinating. Scary.
Premolars are not cool. Not popular. Not fascinating. Not scary. Nevertheless, some premolars have been masquerading as canines (Fig 2) just because they were big. The evidence shows premolars (not the first maxillary tooth) were caniniform before canines (the first maxillary tooth) were caniniform (Fig 1).

There’s more to this story… (see below).

Figure 1. Cherry-picked synapsids in the lineage of mammals preceding the bottom two mammals. Note the canine (orange) vs the premolars (blue). Some interesting patterns here. What happened before Pachygenelus – if I got that right.

Earlier we looked at the ‘odd teeth’
of the tiny marsupial Glironia (Fig 2), which were ‘odd’ because a double-rooted premolar had taken over the position and size of the vestigial-to-lost canine. Evidently this also happened in Dromiciops (Fig 2). Sometimes it is difficult to tell in certain mammals. Now the evidence demonstrates that Glironia was just following genetic instructions that had resurfaced in order to confuse paleontologists who considered these large teeth to be double- and triple-rooted canines based on their size and position.

Let’s reset this argument in a phylogenetic arena.

Figure 2. Above: Dromiciops skull and tooth row (right rotated). Below: Glironia skull and tooth row (right, rotated).

According toWikipedia,
it is the size of the tooth that determines whether or not it is a canine tooth. Not the root number. Not the first position inside the maxilla. I find that strange.

Maybe that definition needs to change.
Or… maybe not.

Maybe today’s canine tooth is really
just a large, single-rooted premolar, a holdover from the synapsid days, that has gradually migrated to the front of the maxillary as the original small, single-rooted teeth that were once located there, over time and generations, have become vestiges and disappeared.

The above graphic is equivocal on that matter.
Maybe a grad student will pick this up as a thesis project and figure this out.

Figure 3. Mammal tooth evolution alongside odontocete tooth evolution, reversing the earlier addition of cusps.
Figure 3. Mammal tooth evolution alongside odontocete tooth evolution, reversing the earlier addition of cusps.

In any case,
the ‘back teeth’ developed multiple cusps and multiple roots (Fig 1). That’s for sure.

Then in odontocetes, those ‘back teeth slowly and over generations reverted to the pelycosaur grade: single rooted, single cusp (Fig 3).

In any case, this appears to be a novel hypothesis.
If not, please provide a citation so I can promote it here.
