Manganese-silicon altermagnet works as a spin source in lateral spin valves
Researchers from the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (FZU), CIC nanoGUNE in Spain, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Aix-Marseille University, SPINTEC in Grenoble and several other institutions have demonstrated electrical spin injection from an altermagnet, a magnet with vanishing net magnetization. The team says it is the first experiment to clearly show that a spin current can be extracted from this class of materials.

Today’s spintronic devices generate spin currents with ferromagnets, whose stray magnetic fields can interfere with neighboring devices as they shrink and are packed closer together. Antiferromagnets avoid this problem but cannot generate a spin current. Altermagnets, described only in recent years, have zero net magnetization, yet the symmetry of their crystal splits electrons by spin almost as strongly as in ferromagnets.
