The Biggest Threat You'll Face In A Collapse Situation Is ..... By Marjory Wildcraft

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Remember that poll you and I participated in where a whopping 76% of us felt the most probable big disaster is economic collapse.  No wonder – European countries falling like dominoes, talk of ‘fiscal cliffs’ here in the US, and Governments worldwide spending way more than they can ever repay.  You don’t have to be a genius to see it coming.

Recovering from economic collapse, like almost every scenario of collapse, will take decades.  If we ever “recover”.

What is the biggest threat you will face during a collapse situation?

There are actually four big threats, but the biggest threat of them all is….

large human populations.

Yes, I am talking about armed thugs and gangs coming to kill you or get your stuff.  But more importantly, people pose an even bigger concern.  Famine and disease are by far the largest killers of humanity (far more so than bullets or weapons) and both famine and disease are exacerbated in areas with higher density of human populations.  The more people there are the faster diseases spread, and the fights over existing resources will be bloodier.

Setting up a survival retreat, farm, or homestead in an out of the way location is the logical step that many people are starting to take.  Rural land prices are dropping in many locations.  I’ll bet you’ll be surprised at how inexpensive it can be.

So the further away from heavily populated areas – the better off you will likely be.

How far is far away?

The “ultimate best” answer is at least a tank of gas away from a major US city.  That’s about 300 miles.  Look at a map of population density of the US.  Especially one of the maps taken at night – also quite revealing.  In reality there are only a few areas in the Western US that meet this criteria.  Yes, the Western States are definitely less populated, although they do have some other issues, and I’ll get back to the option of Western States in future articles.

The next best option for most of us is to be as far away from a major city as possible.  So 100 or 200 miles is a reasonable range and opens up a lot more possible locations for your retreat.

There are a few surprising exceptions to the 300 mile rule.  For example, I know of one small community that is very close to a major city, but because of geographic protection in the form of very steep terrain, that small community is isolated from the large nearby urban population.

So human population is the biggest threat you will face in a collapse situation.  What are the other three big threats?   What regions are known for having preppers already?  How can you go about finding the perfect community?  And what do you need to know before buying the actual land?
