How much does it cost to can your own food? If energy prices keep increasing, will you still be able to afford to can what you grow in your garden?
The three energy sources used in home canning are propane, natural gas, and electricity. Over at the ForeChron Report, they calculated how much it costs per quart to can your own food using these energy sources and projected canning costs as energy prices rise.
For those of us who value self-sufficiency, we need to project our food preservation costs so that we can plan our response as energy prices rise.
I also found a good post on the ForeChron Report that discusses if you can grow all of the food you eat and how much land that might take. The answers surprised me. As a result, I am planning to change what we grow in our garden next year.
Do you know what it costs you to can your own food? I didn’t and we can a lot of food every year. I was surprised to see that if propane prices rise again this winter, as they did last winter, that my canning costs will almost double. We can meat during the winter. This winter is projected to be as bad , or worse, than last winter in our area. I am afraid that next summer, propane prices may remain unusually high and affect our garden canning plans as well.
