It’s name is Eta Carinae. It’s a star—or to be absolutely accurate—a binary star. And it’s getting ready to destroy anything within 50,000 light years of it…like Earth.
Although few have ever heard of Eta Carinae, if things go wrong—horribly wrong—it could be the final, gasping words spilling from the gnarled lips of the last dying humans on Earth.
Once and for all, Doomsday really will have arrived.
Although it might sound like some Grade-B Hollywood End-of-the-World thriller, the scenario is very real. All too real. And it’s too close for comfort in more ways than one.

If ever there was a ticking time bomb in our galaxy, it would be Eta Carinae—at least as far as life on Earth is concerned.
For Eta Carinae is a killer waiting to strike.

When pushed on the issue, all astronomers agree that Eta Carinae could easily destroy all life on Earth, or at the very least, the side facing the death star when its celestial greetings of doom come knocking on our door.
When will that be? It’s anyone’s guess. Some scientists think it could be within our lifetimes, even as early as—dare it be said?—2012.

The calculations are in, and they’re not looking good.
Grim astronomers grudgingly admit that when the massive Eta Carinae detonates it could well be a hypernova, not a supernova. The terrible truth is, it’s more likely than not to be a hypernova.
What is a hypernova? It’s an explosion that’s also termed a type 1c Supernova that happens to hypergiant stars with a mass 100 to 300 times larger than the sun. When hypergiant stars explode they release incredible energy all at once—an explosion equivalent to 100 or more supernovae exploding simultaneously.
The killer star’s light will be so intense it will be visible across millions of light years reaching to other galaxies. In fact, it might, for a time, outshine all the light generated by all the other stars in our own galaxy.

Eta Carinae will release off-the-scale gamma ray bursts. According to scientists, if that burst hits Earth the radiation flux at the fringe of our planet’s atmosphere will equal a one kiloton nuclear explosion over every square mile that takes the direct hit.
Nothing can absorb such titanic fury. The total energy slamming Earth would be roughly 200 million kilotons. Next to that an all out thermonuclear war would look like a Fourth of July fireworks show.

Unfortunately, the Earth is well within that death zone as the killer star lies only 7,500 light years away from us.

Scientists believe such massive bursts are the cause of some mass extinction events during the Earth’s past.
A team led by astrophysicist Brian Thomas at Washburn University theorizes a hypernova might have initiated the Ordovician-Silurian mass erxtinctiopn event that occured about 440 million years ago.

Right now, the killer star is radiating energy at a mind-boggling rate: 5 million times more than our sun. Because of its energy—like a gigantic fusion reactor gone wild—Eta Carinae is the brightest star in the Milky Way galaxy.

It also dwarfs our star, which is tiny in comparison, for Eta Carinae is more than 100 times as massive as our sun.

Dave Pooley, at the University of California at Berkeley, says if Eta Carinae were observed to explode “it would be so bright that you would see it during the day, and you could even read a book by its light at night.”
Of course, that assumes you’re still alive.

Well, maybe Earth has a little more time, right? Well, maybe not.
Some astrophysicists at the European Space Agency have suggested it’s quite possible, based on observational analysis, that the killer star has already gone hypernova thousands of years ago and the speeding death rays could inundate Earth in as little as a year.

When Eta Carinae goes supernova, any gamma ray bursts will be emitted from the north and south poles – Earth would only be affected if it was in direct line of the poles, which it isn’t. Only a tiny amount of gamma ray radiation will come our way. It’s interesting that this article plagarises the Wikipedia article which explains that, but only the hypothetical bit about what would happen if there was a direct hit of a gamma ray burst on the Earth, and ignores the bit which says Earth isn’t in line for a direct hit. This reporter should be ashamed of himself.

The first Anonymous “denier” actually had quite a few facts in it. The person explained how and why this really is not a threat, because we are not in line with where the gamma radiation will actually be headed.
Go watch “Revelations of the pyramids”. They mention a 100 mile strip that circles the Earth that contains MOST of the world’s pyramids!! The circle crosses our equator at an angle. I believe that that strip was once our ACTUAL EQUATOR!! The Earth was hit by some force and its poles moved to our present heading. 10 to 12,000 yrs ago many species of life died off and landscapes changed dramatically.. FACT!! To the first anonymous poster, I agree this article is sensationalist and a little overboard. However, I wouldn’t be so glib about the damage that could be caused by this star going hypernova. It is true that the poles are not pointed directly at the Earth but they are not at right angles, either. There seems to be somewhat less than a 45 degree angle of the poles to the position of the Earth and the variable here is whether the gamma burst is perfectly straight or whether there is an angular distribution. If it an angular distribution, what is the energy intensity vs. angle? It may not be 200 million kilotons but what if it is 10% (20 million kilotons) or 5% (10 million kilotons) or even 1% (2 million kilotons)? At 1% it is still the equivalent of 40 of the largest nuclear weapons ever detonated (Tsar bomb) spread over the upper atmosphere of half the planet. Not an insignificant event; especially to the fragile ozone layer.
With all the astronomical equipment and technology we have today, we will be learning a lot about hyper or super novas when this does occur.
So… its about as likely as a super-volcano eruption or comet impact. It may happen tomorrow, or it may happen thousands of years from now. I’m not going to lose much sleep over it.

Uh, No! You don’t understand what “light years” means, obviously. 7500 lights years means that we are viewing the image of the star that existed 7500 years ago. When we see the hypernova occur through our telescopes or with our eyes, it will have been an event that happened 7500 years ago. When we see the event, the gamma burst will be occurring at the same time (more or less, we may actually experience the gamma burst BEFORE we see the visible light. Gamma radiation may be able to travel faster than the speed of light).
Bottom line, when we see it, we will feel it.

Think really hard about this for a moment. You’re saying the Earth’s axis changed _after_ the pyramids were built a few thousand years ago. That a collision powerful enough to move the rotational axis happened within recorded history? All the other (many) reasons this claim doesn’t make sense aside, consider just this one.
Factor into your evaluation the fact our seasons, made possible by the Earth’s tilt, had a lot to do with the emergence of life.

I think the limitations of mankind is best summarised by own experiences. As a concert standard pianist, I have conjored some tricks over many years of dedicated study and rehearsal. Certain individuals seem to have a high opinion as to what man can comprehend and a low opinion as to human limitation. Personally as a confessed intellectual – who has “walked the walk” as to what is possible vis a vis individual performance of the piano – I see absolute limitation in human comprehension. With that, it is implausible to speak intelligently about these fantasy astro calculations.
Some might say it is the arrogance of science that permits these wild assessments. But the scientists are not the only ones prone to bouts of unconditional arrogance. Lately the Israeli leadership seems to have just about lost the plot with their lust for imposing Armageddon on the world to suit their fanatical nuclear agenda. Though Japan offers a minor set back, if I were to bet on a significant event blessed by the spirits (Vive Maya) for 2012, it would be a very man made thermonuclear war. If I were a pesky doomsday spreader, that’s what I would spread.
Unfortunately I’m not a betting man, so the only “out” I see is a hostile alien takeover of this planet to knock some sense into its current “leadership” (sic). Shame, because as we all know, aliens don’t exist – the scientists told us that. The other option is to turn to God. Ouch, I forgot – He doesn’t exist, as well – at least according to science. All I can say if this fantastic death star turns out so, it will be a vastly more favourable option to an Israeli planned and initiated thermonuclear war. People don’t build pyramids now because they take decades, are astronomically expensive if you’re not King of Everything, and we no longer believe our leaders are divinity incarnate (as Pharaoh, your orders are unquestioned as the word of a God; as president, not so much).
If you’re claiming we don’t have the engineering wherewithal to construct a pyramid, you’re wrong. It’s a stack of stone blocks with a polished limestone sheathing. OK, a really well-done stack of stone blocks. But still.
Let’s take this a step further. If you build a ring of pyramids around the entire planet to mark the equator, to have the evidence you claim to see today, the planet would have to stay still, and the rotational axis would have to move. Do you see that? The planet can’t get knocked over sideways 23.5 degrees after the pyramids were built, because if that happened, the equator and the pyramids would all move with it. You would have to stop the rotation, and restart it based on a new, separate pole. That’s the only way to “change” the equatorial line.
In any event, there are pyramids in Mexico, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and the west Pacific and they clearly do not fall along any kind of 100-mile wide band no matter how you draw the line.
God has promised a different ending. I believe Him. I trust Him. Fear is a waste of energy.

“Science” has done nothing of the sort. Alien life probably exists, just based on the math. There is no proof, however — mathematical or otherwise — that supports the claim alien life is currently present on Earth. Big difference. If you have some contrary proof that would pass rational scrutiny using the scientific method, present it.
Likewise, “science” has nothing to say about the existence of a god. At most, there is simply no proof that an invisible man in the sky invented the universe. If you choose to believe it because it makes sense to you for some reason, that’s your business. Scientists won’t and can’t take up the question; they have more useful things to work on.

Gamma radiation travel faster than the speed of light? Last time I checked, gamma radiation still fell along the electromagnetic spectrum and was governed by the same laws of physics as the rest of the universe. And that’s without even touching on that whole Theory of Relativity thing.

While it’s a pretty neat study, it is yet to be independently verified. The Golden Rule to any extraordinary claim is that it requires extraordinary evidence. Also, the MINOS experiment showed no anomaly such as this. I trust the equipment, facility and staff at Fermilab a whole heck of a lot more than CERN. That last bit can be attributed to personal and professional bias, though.

I like reading the ever-more tortured rationalizations from people like Lukes — I learn quite a bit about that mentality in the process — and there’s always the chance people who are reading, but not posting, will be entertained (and possibly better informed).

The prehistorical period is so defined because we lack a written record of those events. For information predating about 3000 BCE, we have to rely on archaeology and like techniques. If you have a specific question about the prehistorical period, set it out there and we can discuss what we’ve learned so far.
Understand that we have to make inferences about the prehistorical period from archaeological evidence. Your tendency, based on your text above, may be to fill holes in our knowledge with aliens. I encourage you to reconsider this approach.

That really made me laugh. I hope you’re joking, because that is how I first took your post. Then I second guessed myself and thought it may be that you’ve just seen too many dutchsinse videos.

It says everything within 50,000 lightyears would be destroyed. Our galaxy is only (I say only lol) 100,000 lightyears across. So they are suggesting that one star (or a binary star) could destroy half the galaxy? Nonsense!!!
This is blown way out of proportion. Will Eta Carenae’s hypernova be a catastrophic explosion? yes. Will it effect earth in any harmful way? no. The most it will do is create a breath taking light show. Eta Carenae is a little over 7500 light years away and it’s estimated that it’s explosion will effect other stars within 100-200 light years of Eta Carenae, so it’s explosion wont even come close to effecting us. Not to mention that there is no saying when its going to happen, it COULD happen next year or it could happen tomorrow; they’ve estimated that it MAY happen in our life time, but there’s no certainty as to whether or not it will happen next year. This article is taking something small and making it seem like a big deal, therefore this website is, in no way, a reliable source. Anyone reading this should find the real facts from a much more credible site.
