Comet ISON Spotted Again, and Not Looking Good

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

A couple weeks earlier than we expected, amateur imager Bruce Gary in Arizona has apparently become the first person to pick up Comet ISON again after its 2½-month intermission behind the glare of the Sun. Using an 11-inch scope pointing very low in the eastern dawn, and by stacking images, he succeeded in recording a fuzzy point with an anti-sunward tail at Comet ISON’s exact predicted position among stars that are as faint as magnitude 16. Measuring the image, Gary comes up with a V magnitude of 14.3 ± 0.2 for the comet that is being so widely anticipated worldwide.

What does that mean, bright or dimmer?

A couple of factors could be influencing this…BOTH of which will still permit ISON to be brilliant.
First, the solar wind has been very low lately. In fact this solar maximum was been the lowest in over one hundred years…so this could be reducing the reactivity of the comet below expectations.
Second, long term comets have lots of dirt on them, combined with the low solar wind, the situation may be that not a lot of this dirt has been blown off, and you won’t see that happen until it gets closer to the Sun…and then you might see a lot of activity very quickly. The mitigating factor is that radar shows ISON nucleus to be small, only 3 miles or so, so, yeah, it might be a dud. But I am still holding out hope based on other factors….which I might better discuss on the UNEXPLAINED tab than the space tab…hahah. as in ALL ASTRONOMY it’s wait until it hits the fan to see what it’s really like.

I tried to watch the video but decided to watch the wall paper peel instead.

Here’s to hoping C/2012 S1 puts on a great show despite these things often fizzling out.

Dec 21st 2012, the end is nigh.
