The Power of Being Gandhi-like

If ever there was an inspirational role model, it is ‘The Mahatma;’ known to the world as Gandhi. To emotionally transform and live his teachings is indeed the ultimate example of what it means to awaken spiritually and live life as who you truly are: as a child of God.

Gandhi embodied what we are all seeking and yearning:  love, to be love, to receive love and to be loving. He taught us that God is love, and that like God, he himself had no religion. Yet, at the same time, he saw religions as “different roads converging to the same point.”  He then added, “What does it matter that we take different roads so long as we reach the same goal?”  And what is this goal?

The goal is for each of us to find the capacity to accept and embrace what Gandhi called “unity in diversity.”  Our ability to reach this place or state of unity is indeed the true test of our world today. Our very survival as a species and the Earth’s survival as well, depends upon achieving this one goal.

Gandhi explained, in one profound statement, how we each become a means, a vessel or conduit so to speak, for this unity consciousness to become an actual reality in our lifetime.  To create unity, he said we each “must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

For many of us, the question is “How do I become this change?” and “How do I let go of my hatreds, my prejudices, my anger and resentments toward a world where suffering, injustice, violence and pain still exist?”

The answer for all of us, said Gandhi, is for each of us to have “the desire to improve ourselves for the sake of doing good to others.”  This, he felt, was the highest state of morality.

“A man,”  he wrote, “is but the product of his thoughts; what he thinks, he becomes.”  To become moral, then, is to attain mastery over our minds and begin to live from our hearts, putting others first by being of service to the world.

The content of your service is not important. As Gandhi explained: “No matter how insignificant the thing you have to do; do it as well as you can, give it as much of your care and attention as you would give to the thing you regard as most important. For it will be by those small things that you will be judged.”

By making service to others our one goal in the physical world, and loving from our hearts our inner goal or spiritual goal, we become ‘Gandhi-like.’

“Truth resides in ever human heart, and one has to search for it there and to be guided by truth as one sees it. But no one has a right to coerce others to act according to his own views of truth.”  What a beautiful and powerful Gandhi-ism!

When we seek Truth, which is rooted in love, we effectively change ourselves and our world. Gandhi knew that love was and always will be the greatest power in the cosmos. He knew this as absolute truth when he stated that “power based in love is a thousand times more effective and permanent than the one derived from fear of punishment.”

Few can ignore the impact Mahatma Gandhi had on our world in the last century. His influence has carried over in to this new millennium and he is still seen as the archetype, the living embodiment of man being goodness and performing good deeds at the highest levels of consciousness.
