Here is a question for all you Bible scholars.

Here is a question for all you Bible scholars.

Faith is a word employed by almost every “flavor’ of so called Christianity.

Faith is one of the Three;  Faith, Hope and Love.

Faith is not easily defined.  If we speak of a tree or a stone a clear picture comes to mind, what picture comes to mind with the word ‘faith’?

Here is the question;

Jesus Christ, in Matthew chapter 8, marveled and told the Centurion He Had not found so great a faith in Israel.

In verse 9 the Centurion is speaking of Authority, of giving commands and the commands being obeyed without question or hesitation.

How does this fit with what you have been taught concerning the term “faith”?

It appears Christ is equating faith to authority.

Can you tell us why Christ made that statement and why understanding authority is great faith?

5  And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,

6  And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.

7  And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

9  For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10  When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

Friend are you suggesting submission to wicked tyranny as exists with the powers the be and have been?

God’s word can tell you why Jesus made that statement. It’s all in the word “amazed”, as in, there are only two times that it is ascribed to Jesus when it comes to faith.

Jesus amazed by faith (or lack thereof)

      1) – In the parable of the faithful centurion (Matt 8:5-13, Luke 7:1-10) a Roman, who understood the intricacies and responsibilities of the chain of command, clearly recognised that Jesus had the authority to command even nature and it would obey.

      2) – In the parable of the prophet without honour (Mark 6:1-6, Matt 13:53-58) Jesus was not recognised in His hometown even though He’d recently performed a number of miracles which the people were sure to have heard about.

In conclusion; the humble gentile had more faith than the prideful Jew therefore, i suggest, the teaching is more about pride and humility than it is about authority and faith.

Who can argue with this assessment?

But for certain, you Kiwis spell ‘recognize’ wrong.

I’d go along to get along, i’ve no problem with the concept, however the way English words are spelt is a source of endless entertainment when conversing with the brave and free.

            Now, now…

Our way is surely the new and improved way…

            …in’nit?

I mean, everything else we do turns out just right, every time.

At least it does in the movies.

            (The old movies.)

            • Mayhem

Mayhaps it is, the new, er, way but ya’ll (yes i did) tore the soul out of the language which really puts a kink in my need to be right all the time.

It’s not easy making allowances, for you uppity colonials, but one must as needs be…

              I can only apologize.

            • Cintus Supremus

(Something tells me he’s not apologizing TO us, Merkins…

              but FOR us.)

      Cintus, Mayhem

I read it as trust in Christ’s authority.

When we are told to ask in Jesus name, to me that means use the authority of Jesus Christ to ask our Father for what is needed.

All power in heaven and earth have been given to Christ — in HIS Name is “ALL” POWER thus Christ IS THE Authority, only the Father is greater than Christ.

I knew only you two would comment

      • Cintus Supremus

        “…trust in Christ’s authority…”

Of course the Roman trusted in His authority — but that’s a reality which was only made possible by his recognition of that authority. Even The Twelve didn’t recognize His authority so readily — they had to see Christ still the waves with a simple command. And even then, their faith was not as whole as the Roman’s, who had (as far as we know) never seen Christ before he sought Him.

“…I knew only you two would comment…”

faith/trust is a gift and a fruit of the Spirit and must grow.

I obey because I know what has been promised and I know HE has the authority and the POWER to make it happen.

With out power authority is nothing.

          • Cintus Supremus

“I obey because I know what has been promised and I know HE has the authority and the POWER to make it happen.”

That is EXACTLY how I was thinking until very recently.

You know what He said to me?

He said: Your interest in your salvation is purely selfish.

Well now. That stung, let me tell you. But only because I recognized immediately how utterly true it was. And so, that’s what I’m working on lately. The right things for the right reasons.

            No mean feat.

            • Truthseeker

              cintus I agree.

My statement I will stick with as “a” part of the reason I obey, the main reason I obey is I have come to realize my way is the way of pain, suffering and death thus I obey HIS WILL as I know only His will produces good results produces righteousness and I have come to despise this satanic world and every thing in it.

Yes I want to be in the Kingdom and I want to be freed from this body of death i.e. carnal human nature.

Yes it is in my best interest to seek the Will of our Father with every thing in me because I do want to live forever but only if it is in the family of GOD.

I view the Lake of Fire as an act of mercy – I have no interest in living in the flesh — for all eternity.

There is nothing of value on this earth – only the Kingdom of God.
