Paulo Odogwu must be fuming!

If I was Paulo Odogwu I would be a tad upset right now.

The calf injury to Henry Slade this week, which has seen Elliot Daly surprisingly drafted into the England number 13 shirt to face Ireland on Saturday (leapfrogging the probably equally pissed-off Ollie Lawrence), could at last have provided Odogwu the opportunity to be named in the England matchday squad and earn his first cap.

But alas, no.

Rather than trust a member of his 28 man squad, a player who has been in the camp bubble since January, Eddie Jones has instead selected Lawrence and Joe Marchant – who only joined the squad as cover for Slade this week – on the bench.

I am not saying that Marchant – who is a fine player and is bang in form – shouldn’t be selected, but it does appear increasingly that Odogwu is there simply to make up the numbers and, possibly, to keep him out of Italy’s clutches.

It would come as no surprise at all if he subsequently decided to throw in his lot with the Azzurri and, frankly, I wouldn’t blame him.
