World 12s is dead
“World 12s” – the new franchise-based 12-a-side competition planned for next year is – at least according to World Rugby – dead.
Launched as long ago as September, the competition was due to have been held in England next year, featuring 192 of the world’s best players and generating circa £250m of revenues
World Rugby, however, “do not wish to explore the concept further at this time”.
The reason? Largely it looks as if it’s down to trying to fit such a concept into an already congested calendar.
All of which sounds pretty conclusive – although I suppose that exponents of the new competition may say that, much like the parrot in Monty Python’s famous sketch, World 12s is merely resting, or possibly pining for the fjords…?
