For the second game in a row the Giants scored five runs in the 8th inning to turn around a 6-2 deficit and go on to win. Miraculous late-inning comebacks aren’t usually a sustainable winning strategy but they sure are fun. And this win brought the 2024 Giants back to a .500 record for the first time since March 31st.
Rookie shortstop Marco Luciano had three hits (including a triple) and is now hitting .409 but he also made two errors, one of them in the 9th. Camilo Doval struggled once again but managed to pull off the save thanks to an exceptional 5-3 final play from Matt Chapman and LaMonte Wade, Jr. Doval has walked 15 in 20-2/3 IP and add in the 16 hits and the bases have been crowded with him on the hill. Patrick Bailey’s grand slam was the big blow in the five-run rally but homers from Jorge Soler and Mike Yastrzemski helped as well. That’s three games in a row where there’s been a four-run homer.
Luis Matos hit in the leadoff spot and went 0-for-5 with an RBI but also made a great catch in center to save an extra-base hit. Kyle Harrison started and struggled through five but was bailed out by Nick Avila and another good inning from bullpen workhorse Ryan Walker.
Apparently three comebacks in a row of four runs or more is a team record. It’s nice to see them winning. Let’s hope they can sustain it. Jordan Hicks starts tomorrow at 10:40 a.m. PT.
