OTL: Lamar Jackson Slims Down
Jared got roped into jury duty, so it’s my turn to fill in again. Let’s see what’s crackin’, shall we?
Lamar Jackson seems to have slimmed down a bit. He said earlier this week that while he was playing at 230 lb two years ago and 215 last season, he’s back down to 205.

Isaiah Likely talked about it with Kay Adams, saying that he barely recognized his quarterback when they got together this offseason.

“If y’all thought L was fast before…”
Jackson seemed to have lost a bit of his open-field breakaway speed over the last several seasons. Now, was that solely a function of bulking up, or was it the inevitable march of Father Time? Jackson seems to be banking on the former. Likely, entering his third season, never played with the 2018-21 version of LJ, who seemed to possess that extra gear.
How will the cutting cycle affect Jackson’s play? Time will tell.
Speaking of Lamar, Eric DeCosta was on the Ryan Ripken show this week, and one of the things he talked about was the negotiation process that locked the QB in with Baltimore for his second contract.

It’s nice that it’s all in the rearview now, but EDC says that those negotiations were the biggest professional challenge he’s ever faced. He mentioned that both he and Jackson wanted the talks to stay quiet. We all remember the silence, and how Ravens Flock took it to mean whatever their individual preconceived notions preferred. It led to lashing out on social media not just to other fans, but to DeCosta’s wife, Lacie, who is active on X, and even to EDC’s children in the community. “It was tough on my family. Very tough on my children, tough on my wife…”
Shame on anyone who participated in such tomfoolery.
Looking even further back in time a bit, here’s another cool tidbit from Ryan and Eric’s chat, this time about the 2008 Draft.
The Ravens drafted Joe Flacco and Ray Rice with their first two picks in the 2008 NFL draft

EDC, who was working behind Ozzie Newsome at the time, spoke about the game plan he crafted to allow the team to take Joe Flacco as low as possible, without risking losing their shot at the guy who would eventually be a Super Bowl MVP. The maneuvering was also done knowing that they eventually wanted to take a running back out of Rutgers.
Here’s the entire interview, which is well worth your time.
Hope that helps you get through your Friday and into the weekend!
