Summary and Projection: Booker blocks everything as a pass protector, gives up very little pressure and no sacks in his last year on campus. He has outstanding hands, efficient feet and an immovable anchor. The interesting conversation with Booker starts with his athleticism which is far from ideal. It shows up when he’s asked to block in space but he makes blocks more functional than you might think in space. Needs to sustain blocks in the running game more consistently. Overall, he is likely to be a long-term starter at Guard for a team that runs more than it’s fair share of Gap plays and he’ll keep your Quarterback clean for years. Draft Projection: Late Round 1 (Grinding the Mocks)
Ravens Fit: A throwback fit for the Ravens, who have moved on from Booker’s type to more athletic players with their Offensive Line rebuild. I would argue that they should consider him though. When they were running a heavier Gap scheme, they picked Tyler Linderbaum based on his talent, and I would argue if Booker drops to the Ravens in the first round, they should consider it similar value. He can be a functional blocker on Zone runs, albeit inconsistently, but it’s his pass protection that would be invaluable to the Ravens, keeping Lamar Jackson clean from his spot and allowing the Ravens to focus more resources on supporting whoever plays the other Guard position. The Ravens won’t do this, as they appear high on Daniel Faalele, but I would plug Booker in as an upgrade at the Right Guard spot and work something out on the left side. In their scheme, the responsibilities for the Right Guard down-in and down-out, seem more suited to Booker’s skillset and I’d want a square peg in a square hole. Quick mention too for how his attitude is exactly what the Ravens should be looking for on the line – he badly wants to dominate opponents and this shows up on his game film.
Overall Fit 3/5
Protecting the Passer
Outstanding pass protector and the biggest plus point to his game. I wouldn’t normally mention anchor at the top of an evaluation but his is remarkable. Even against dynamic and powerful rushers trying to convert speed to power or against any type of bull-rush from any type of rusher, he can sink his hips, set his feet and stalemate the rusher, maintaining the integrity of the pocket. He has a wide and balanced base in pass protection and moves with efficiency and purpose, even despite his athletic limitations. With how thick he is in the pants, how well he bends and how long his arms are, he is tough to move in any situation and has off-the-charts play strength. His hand usage in pass protection is excellent, it is very difficult to get him to commit early and put himself in a compromising position, he’s so patient with his hands and always times them perfectly no matter his set depth. He is nasty and competitive as a pass blocker, he seems angry that someone would dare rush the passer against him. He has explosive power and shows it when he goes looking for working, popping defenders sideways into a different zip code at times. His hand placement and latch strength are also consistently good, whether working with independent hands or a two-handed strike, he maximises his play strength through his hand technique. On the rare occasions that he doesn’t land his strike, he can re-fit his hands and re-latch with little fuss. If a defender tries to cross face he knows how to maintain leverage and can stay latched despite some creakiness in his hip mobility. He’s a good processor and can move quickly to cut off stunts and games, the processing helps make up for some deficiency when moving laterally.
Run Blocking
On the move: He is not the best mover and he can struggle to position in space, when he doesn’t have to move laterally and can take a straight-line path to his block, he will make the block count but in other scenarios in space he can struggle. He also won’t sustain reach blocks when he has to move laterally to a defender not lined up across from him. Having said that, he competes and strains to make blocks against second level defenders, it’s never pretty but it can be functional – even if he’s able to throw a hand at the defender he can facilitate a path for his Running Back. He will also always hustle in the open-field, on film you can see him all-out sprint 40 yards down the field to make an inconsequential block on a Defensive Back. The guy competes hard and wants to end people, it’s hard not to enjoy his film, even in this aspect where he struggles more.
Run blocking the big dude across from him: He’s a very good Gap blocker. On Down blocks, he can wall off against elite competition and get real movement against others, the least he will do is build an impenetrable trench that is hard to breach even slightly. He has solid positioning and fit on Gap blocks but against defenders with elite explosion, get-off, bend and play strength themselves, he cannot sustain Gap blocks and will allow the defender to fall off the block and make a play on the ball carrier. When he’s pulling or kicking out defenders, and he gets an angle on a defender with a clear path to contact, he will run through them and it will look like a small car parked in front of a large freight train. He will move people at the point of attack if they don’t match his play strength, and displays explosive strength in close quarters.
