Bulls connected to jarring Matas Buzelis trade that could ruin their future

The Chicago Bulls are entering a crucial offseason in which they will have a brilliant opportunity to build a legitimate contender going forward, but they have to be extra careful to make the right moves.

The Bulls are loaded with cap room and own pick Nos. 4 and 15 in the NBA Draft, so they definitely have the ammunition they need to add some significant pieces this summer. But could Chicago do something wild and try to consolidate some of its assets for one player?

There has been some speculation that the Bulls could try to swing a trade with the Washington Wizards to acquire the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft, which they would then almost surely use to select BYU star AJ Dybantsa. But how much would Chicago be willing to surrender in such a deal?

Well, Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley apparently thinks the Bulls would be open to giving up a gargantuan haul to snatch Dybantsa, even going as far to say that Chicago would include Matas Buzelis in the package.

Buckley’s proposal features the Bulls sending Buzelis and both of their first-round picks to the Wizards in exchange for the top overall selection. A hefty price to pay, indeed.

“Do the Bulls see cornerstone potential in Buzelis? What about Caleb Wilson? How about whichever prospect they realistically think could make it to pick No. 15? If they can’t find a resounding ‘Yes!’ to any of those inquiries, then this trade kind of sells itself,” Buckley wrote.

The general consensus is that Wilson will be available if Chicago stays put at No. 4. The question is whether or not the Bulls really think Dybantsa is that much better of a prospect than Wilson, because a legitimate argument can be made that the latter is actually the best two-way talent in the draft.

Plus, Buzelis flashed star potential during his second NBA season, averaging 16.3 points and 5.8 rebounds over 29.2 minutes per game on 46.3/34.9/78.6 shooting splits. It should also be mentioned that this is a pretty deep draft class, so Chicago could also land a pretty good player at No. 15.

Is all of that really worth it for Dybantsa? It’s something the Bulls really need to ask themselves, because if they offered that trade package, I actually have a hard time believing the Wizards would say “no” unless they are completely in love with Dybantsa, which is always a possibility.
