Bulls linked to brand new trade idea that might surprise you

The Chicago Bulls are certainly in a good position heading into the NBA offseason. They are armed with a wealth of cap room to make some noise in free agency, and they also own the fourth and 15th overall picks in the draft.

The Bulls won just 31 games this season and have posted only one winning campaign over the last decade, so clearly, they need a reboot. But this summer presents them with the perfect opportunity to do just that.

As far as the draft is concerned, the general consensus is that Chicago will just take whoever is left between Cameron Boozer and Caleb Wilson at No. 4 and proceed from there, but there have also been some rumblings that the Bulls could try to trade up to the No. 1 overall pick — owned by the Washington Wizards — to select AJ Dybantsa.

But should Dybantsa really be the top target for Chicago? Or should the Bulls be looking elsewhere?

Andrew Hanlon of Pippen Ain’t Easy has identified who he feels should actually be Chicago’s end game later this month: Darryn Peterson.

It would be shocking if the Wizards didn’t take Dybantsa at No. 1 so long as they keep the pick, so just about everyone assumes that the Utah Jazz will then snatch Peterson at No. 2.

However, Hanlon feels that the Bulls should absolutely be looking to swing a trade with the Jazz so they can nab the University of Kansas product.

“Standing pat and taking Peterson is certainly an option for Jazz president Austin Ainge. But if Ainge believes Peterson, Boozer and Wilson are on the same level as prospects, trading No. 2 to the Bulls for Nos. 4 and 15 becomes an attractive, and, frankly, smart option,” Hanlon wrote.

This ultimately depends on how highly Utah values Peterson, because getting pick Nos. 4 and 15 in exchange for No. 2 is actually fantastic value. To be quite frank, I’m not even sure that’s something Chicago should consider.

This is a pretty deep draft, so the Bulls can come away with Wilson at No. 4 and then turn around and land another impactful player with their second first-round selection. Is Peterson really worth that? It’s debatable.

There are some who view Peterson as the best talent in this draft class, but there is no doubt there are questions surrounding him, and Wilson may have the higher ceiling as a potential two-way star.

It’s an intriguing thought, but Chicago would probably be better off standing pat.
