Chicago Cubs hoping for a lifeline from new pitcher set to make his debut Saturday in Milwaukee

David Peterson, Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs threw a counterpunch on Wednesday as they were being peppered with yet another barrage of devastating punches. It wasn’t a haymaker they offered up in return, but it was a spirited enough shot to show they weren’t waiting for the towel to be thrown in.

In a trade for upwardly-mobile 22-year-old prospect Cole Mathis, the Cubs acquired left-handed pitcher David Peterson from the New York Mets.

The soon-to-be 31-year-old Peterson is coming to Chicago after a rougher than rough season so far and a 6.09 ERA to prove it. But he is just one year removed from his first All-Star Game appointment and two season removed from a career year in 2024 where he posted a 2.90 ERA over 21 starts and 121 innings.

He’s set to take the mound Saturday night in his Cubs debut against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.

David Peterson could be just the right addition

With the announced injuries of Edward Cabrera and Ben Brown that same day—putting them alongside Cade Horton, Justin Steele, and Jameson Taillon as starting pitchers on the IL—picking up Peterson feels like a much greater lifeline than, perhaps, it is.

But maybe it could be something bigger than just the acquisition of an emergency fill-in.

The seven-year veteran has a career groundball rate of 51.5% and a 54.2% grounder rate as recently as last season. And now he’ll have an elite-level infield defense behind him rather than that mess he had backing him up in New York.

“It’s huge,” Peterson told reporters of his new defense. “You look at the guys that are around the infield, and the defense as a whole, it’s hard not to be excited about that group. You see statistically they’re at the top of every list.”

Change of scenery

Moving on from the only organization he’s ever known as a pro will be tough, but the change may be the kind of positive that makes up for a little sentimentality—especially as he heads into free agency at the end of this season.

“We all can acknowledge that sometimes a change of scenery is a good thing,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. “When things aren’t going well, sometimes a fresh start is something that can kind of reenergize you, refocus you, and hopefully get you to a good place. Hopefully, we can provide that.”

“I do think there is something to that,” Peterson observed. “I’ve seen it with other guys. I’ve seen it with friends in the game where they’re kind of stuck in a rut or stuck in a spot that they’re not necessarily enjoying, and they’ve gone somewhere else and had a lot of success. That’s part of what gives me excitement about this opportunity.”

Ready or not, though, Peterson will be stepping into a Cubs situation where the team desperately needs for him to turn things around and succeed.

Added to the return of the injured Matthew Boyd on Thursday, Peterson’s arrival feels like a much-needed shot of good news in this extended run of Cubs bad pitching luck.
