WNBA: New York Liberty at Chicago Sky

The Chicago Sky are looking to get back on track after such an up-and-down first month to the WNBA season. They have seen a lot of new faces on the court and suffered some significant injuries during the first handful of games this year. With expectations not being too high in the preseason, where does one outlet believe the team ranks right now?

ESPN’s WNBA writers collaborated on an article discussing the grades of each team after the first month of the season. The Sky did not do too well, receiving a D+ for how things went. Kareem Copeland wrote a snippet regarding the grade and how things have played out so far.

“The Sky might need to be graded on a curve considering the first month. The roster was completely revamped with the departure of starters Angel Reese and Ariel Atkins along with Kia Nurse, Rebecca Allen, Michaela Onyenwere and Hailey Van Lith. There was early optimism with Rickea Jackson looking like a Most Improved Player candidate with averagees of 18.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.8 blocks. Even her defense had improved. Then she was lost for the season in the fourth game with a torn ACL. The Sky were 3-1 in those four games and have now lost four straight.”

Heading into the June 4 slate of games, the Sky are towards the bottom offensively. They are bottom-three in the WNBA in points per game (81.6), shooting percentage (41.2), and 3-point shooting percentage (25.7). Defensively, they are also struggling at boxing out and limiting second-chance opportunities.

The Sky need to figure out how they can get back on track. It can get late early in the WNBA, and Chicago is already 12th in the league with a 3-6 record, including being winless at home. It is going to be intriguing to see if they can correct course before it gets too late for themselves.
