Chicago White Sox: ESPN gives 90% chance of Freddy Peralta trade

With a surprising start to the season, the Chicago White Sox are expected to be aggressive before the trade deadline on Aug. 3.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today and Jon Hayman of the MLB Network expect the White Sox to go after pitching help at the deadline, especially for a starting pitcher who can help a rotation that has a chance to play extra baseball in the playoffs after two miserable seasons.

Before taking on the New York Yankee on Wednesday, the White Sox have a 38-33 record, and are tied with the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central.

One pitcher for the White Sox to keep their eyes on is New York Mets right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta. Per ESPN, there is a 90 percent chance the Mets trade Peralta this season. Despite having the MLB’s second-highest payroll, New York is in the dumps with a 33-41 record, the worst in the National League East.

Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan of ESPN noted that Peralta is only making $8 million this season, which would be an “attractive” number for a low-payroll team. (Like the White Sox.)

Peralta is making $8 million this season, an awfully attractive figure for low-payroll teams. While he’s off to a slow start this spring with a 5-5 record and ERA of 3.90, he has plenty in the tank for a team wanting to make a postseason run.

“(Peralta) just turned 30, has below-average fastball velocity and is listed at 6 feet tall and 198 pounds,” they wrote. “So, it’s good to know that he doesn’t succeed due to pure velocity, because he’ll need angles and command in his favor even more going forward.”

The offense has been powering the White Sox through this spring. Per evanalytics.com, Chicago’s rotation ranks 29th with a 4.69 ERA, only better than the Colorado Rockies. For the White Sox to become a legit contender, the pitching must be better in the second half of the season.
