Even without their best power hitter, first baseman Munetaka Murakami (right hamstring strain), the White Sox are second to the New York Yankees (102) for the most home runs (96) in the American League. Alongside Murakami, shortstop Colson Montgomery and third baseman Miguel Vargas have helped take the offense to the next level. Montgomery is second on the team in home runs (17) and third in OPS (.801), and Vargas is third in home runs (16) and second in OPS (.860).
Center fielder Tristin Peters, who isn’t talked about nearly as much in Major League Baseball, has also been exceptional. The White Sox acquired Peters from the Tampa Bay Rays back in December for cash considerations. Peters is the White Sox’s best contact hitter, batting .294, and is fourth on the team in hits (52).
“It would be easy to point to outfielder Tristan Peters, who went from battling for a roster spot out of Spring Training to becoming a force offensively and defensively,” wrote MLB.com’s Scott Merkin. “Or how about third baseman Miguel Vargas, who has emerged as an American League MVP candidate. Let’s not overlook the massive home run power of Munetaka Murakami, who has made a number of teams regret they didn’t pursue him more stridently as a free agent from Japan. But the nod goes to the entire team, taking a step from competitiveness after the 2025 All-Star break to a division leader in mid-June of the current campaign.”
Currently tied with the Cleveland Guradians for the lead in the American League Central, the White Sox could capture their first division title since 2021. For the White Sox to separate themselves from the Guardians, general manager Chris Getz will need to be on his game for the trade deadline (Aug. 3).
The White Sox need pitching. So, acquiring a starter and a bullpen arm is a must.
