Cubs’ blockbuster trade proposal lands perennial Cy Young candidate

The Chicago Cubs have probably been the most Jekyll and Hyde team in baseball this season. They began the year 27-12, putting together a couple of 10-game winning streaks during that span. Since then, however, the Cubs have gone just 13-25 to put themselves in a bit of a danger zone.

Chicago is still very much alive in the National League playoff picture, but it’s clear that the Cubs are reeling. They need help all over the roster, and they especially need to address a starting rotation that has been among the worst in the majors.

Fortunately, Chicago has between now and the MLB trade deadline to swing some moves, and the general expectation is that the Cubs will add at least one pitcher before then. That is, of course, unless they fall out of the race entirely, which could lead to them selling.

The latter seems unlikely, though, so Chicago will probably try and add some pieces.

On that note, Zachary Rotman of FanSided has proposed a trade that would help the Cubs land one of the better pitchers in baseball: San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb.

Rotman’s proposal has Chicago sending Matt Shaw and three prospects (Jaxon Wiggins, Josiah Hartsorn and Owen Ayers) to the Giants in exchange for Webb.

That is certainly a steep price, but Rotman feels it would be worth it for the Cubs, both for now and the future.

“Webb being under control through 2028 at a team-friendly sum, no less, makes him incredibly desirable for any team, but especially a Cubs team that might not be comfortable mortgaging its future for only 2026,” Rotman wrote. “Webb can lead their rotation for the next couple of years, and given his ability to generate ground balls at an elite clip, he’d fit in perfectly with Chicago’s elite infield defense behind him.”

Shaw has been having a strong 2026 campaign for the Cubs, Wiggins is the team’s top-ranked pitching prospect, Hartsorn is now the No. 4 prospect within Chicago’s organization and Ayers (No. 9) is the Cubs’ best minor-league catcher.

That’s quite a package, but with the Cubs being desperate, they might determine it’s fitting for Webb, who has finished within the top six of NL Cy Young voting each of the past three seasons. This year, the 29-year-old has logged a 3.35 ERA and 1.116 WHIP over 13 starts. He owns a lifetime 3.38 ERA since entering the big leagues in 2019.
