Former Chicago Bears WR has troubling outlook on Rome Odunze’s foot
The big revelation from Wednesday’s practice is that Rome Odunze might never be the same after suffering a broken foot near the end of last season, and a Chicago Bears wide receiver provided a grim outlook on foot injuries in the NFL.
Odunze was the leading receiver for the Bears before suffering the injury that caused him to miss the final five games of the regular season. He returned for the postseason, making four receptions for 88 yards.
“This is my new normal,” Odunze said, via Dan Wiederer of The Athletic. “And it’s not from a standpoint that I’m always in pain, but the way my foot broke, there’s callouses in there that create a different type of foot structure with those bones — different types of things that kind of shift things around.
“So my new normal is kind of what I am going into.”
Sports doctor Jesse Morse weighed in on Odunze’s comments in a post on X, suggesting the overcoming of the foot injury could be “challenging” for Odunze and “linger”.

In response to Morse’s post, former Bears wide receiver Allen Robinson admitted that the navicular foot injury he suffered in 2022 never healed properly.
“Navicular fracture year 9. Just wasn’t the same!” Robinson wrote, though he didn’t have any long-term problems with a foot injury from 2014. “Very tough, ironically suffered one on my other foot my rookie year. Had no issues with that one.”
Robinson, a second-round pick in 2014, played for the Bears in 2018 to 2021. He underwent season-ending knee surgery in November of 2022 when he was with the Los Angeles Rams. He has 339 receiving yards and three touchdowns through 10 games that season.
Robinson would play two more seasons in the league, starting in 17 for the Pittsburgh Steelers and recording 34 catches for 280 yards. He appeared in 12 games for the Detroit Lions in 2024, recording just 3 receptions for 30 yards. He never scored a touchdown after having surgery.
Odunze, 24, is a lot younger than Robinson when he suffered the navicular injury. It remains to be seen how the Bears receive can bounce back during his third season in the league.
