Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell (0)

Kelsey Mitchell did not come out of Monday’s game between the Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury unscathed.

Mitchell took a hit to the face in the fourth quarter courtesy of Mercury star Kahleah Copper’s elbow. This left Mitchell with a bloody lip, but the good news is that she was able to stay in the game to close out the contest.

The three-time WNBA All-Star finished with 22 points on 8-of-20 shooting, to go along with one rebound, an assist, one steal and three triples in 32 minutes of action.

Thanks in part to Mitchell’s contributions, the Fever secured an 86-77 victory over Phoenix.

Slo-Mo Video of Indiana Fever star Kelsey Mitchell taking an elbow to the face

Mitchell immediately grabbed her face after Copper’s elbow made contact. The veteran spent some time on the floor as Stephanie White and her staff tended to her on the baseline. Mitchell emerged with a bloody lip as she made her way back to the bench.

The game officials stopped the game to review the incident for a potential hostile act on Copper. However, the referees did not see any merit. They called an offensive foul on Copper, but it was not upgraded to a flagrant penalty.

A slow-mo video of the incident shows a gruesome angle of Copper’s elbow on Mitchell.

This was just one out of several contentious incidents during the game. In the same quarter, multiple technical fouls were issued after a heated altercation that began with Caitlin Clark and Phoenix veteran DeWanna Bonner. Fever players Sophie Cunningham and Myisha Hines-Allen also got involved, along with Mercury star Alyssa Thomas.

Hines-Allen was later ejected after earning a second technical foul.

It goes without saying that Monday was a testy affair. These two teams will face off again on Wednesday in a rematch at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
