Chicago White Sox trade for World Series Champion Pitcher: Report
Before the All-Star break, the Chicago White Sox were expected to be in the market for pitching help as they plan to make an aggressive push for the postseason.
The White Sox have been the surprise of the MLB this year, and they lead the American League Central by 2.5 games over the Cleveland Guardians after defeating the Houston Astros 12-3 on Sunday.
Following Sunday’s win, the White Sox appear to have made a move that will help the bullpen this summer.
Per Robert Murray, Chicago is set to trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher Jose Urquidy.
“The Chicago White Sox are acquiring pitcher Jose Urquidy from the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to sources familiar with the deal,” Murray posted on X.

Urquidy, 31, won a World Series with the Houston Astros in 2022. The right-handed pitcher appeared in five games for the Pirates this season, earning one save and one loss in 6.1 innings pitched. He has an ERA of 8.53 this season and a career ERA of 4.07.
Urquidy has given up 15 hits, 10 runs, and earned six strikeouts this season.
The White Sox are gaining a pitcher with postseason experience, but Urquidy has not been as dominant since he left the Astros organization. He had a 7.71 ERA with the Detroit Tigers in two games pitched last season.
Urquidy signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Pirates before the season.
The bullpen for the White Sox is ranked No. 14 in the MLB with an ERA of 4.03. Urquidy could do better on the White Sox with a change of scenery.
Chicago could still use starting pitching help this summer. The starting rotation for the White Sox ranks No. 29 with an ERA of 4.70.
The trade deadline is set for Aug. 3, giving the White Sox a week to add help as they make a late-season push for the playoffs.
