DeCosta Lands a Bargain in Jaylinn Hawkins

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

While Ravens Flock was busy hyperventilating over the Maxx Crosby saga and then celebrating the Trey Hendrickson coup, Eric DeCosta slipped another move past the goalie that might age just as gracefully — the two-year, $10 million deal for safety Jaylinn Hawkins, first reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

By the time the ink on the new contract dried, more than a few fans asked, “Jaylinn who?” Fair enough. But dig into the tape, the numbers, and what the folks in Foxborough were saying about him, and this signing looks like classic DeCosta: buy the breakout before the market fully prices it in.

Why the Ravens Needed Him

The safety room took a hit in March. Alohi Gilman departed for the Chiefs and Ar’Darius Washington reunited with John Harbaugh in New York, leaving a void behind starters Kyle Hamilton and Malaki Starks. And here’s the thing about this defense — Baltimore loves having three safeties on the field, because that allows Kyle Hamilton to play his Swiss Army knife role attacking all three levels. No third safety, no Hamilton chess piece. It’s that simple.

Enter Hawkins, a 15-game starter for the AFC Champion Patriots who led New England with four interceptions while adding 71 tackles, six passes defensed, 1.5 sacks, and five quarterback hits.

The Strengths

Start with the center-field work. Per Next Gen Stats, Hawkins was targeted on just 3.8% of his snaps in zone coverage — the fifth-lowest mark of any player with at least 200 zone snaps. Translation: quarterbacks looked his way and decided against it.

Pro Football Focus loved him even more. Hawkins earned an 82.4 overall PFF grade in 2025 — fifth among 98 qualified safeties — with a 79.0 coverage grade (8th) and a run-defense grade of 87.1 that ranked second at the position. Read that again. Second in the league against the run, top-10 in coverage. There aren’t many safeties in football who can claim both.

And don’t mistake the deep-safety label for softness. Against the Ravens last season, you may recall that Hawkins made a touchdown-saving tackle on an outside run by Keaton Mitchell and forced a fumble with a punchout on Derrick Henry. If you can punch the ball away from the King, you can play in Baltimore.

What Foxborough Thought of Him

Don’t take my word for it — take Mike Vrabel‘s. Asked in September what made Hawkins a fit, the Patriots coach said Hawkins had come in playing fast, communicating well, and adding that the more reps Hawkins got, the better he played. When your head coach’s compliments are speed, communication, and violence — that embodies, Play Like a Raven.

He’s come in, he’s played fast, he’s communicated, he’s tried to play with some violence around the line of scrimmage. And whether that’s on the perimeter passes that we saw in some of the earlier games, I think he’s comfortable. And again, the more reps that he’s gotten, I think the better he’s gotten and will hopefully perform. ~ Mike Vrabel on Jaylinn Hawkins

New head coach Jesse Minter didn’t hide his enthusiasm either, praising Hawkins as a deep safety who does a lot of different things and plays with versatility. And The Boston Globe noted back in camp that Hawkins had emerged as a consistent presence and steady voice in the Patriots’ safety room. Locker-room glue with ball skills? So, what’s the rub? How did DeCosta acquire Hawkins so affordably?

The Rub

First, the one-year-wonder concern. Hawkins went from role player and special teamer to one of PFF’s top-five safeties in 2025 while playing on a one-year, $1.8 million deal. Skeptics will note that Jaylinn was surrounded by an elite Patriots secondary, turns 29 in August and has only 47 career starts under his belt. Career years at 28 in a contract season deserve a raised eyebrow.

And then there’s this thing called man coverage. The seasonal review posted by SB Nation’s Pats Pulpit acknowledged Hawkins’ comfort level in New England’s zone-heavy shells, while pointing out weaknesses when asked to play one-on-one. The same review showed he surrendered 22 catches on 32 targets (68.8%) with three touchdowns allowed, plus a hamstring injury that cost him two October games.

Reach or Value?

This is where the deal shines. PFF’s Bradley Locker pointed out that Tre’von Moehrig, Cam Bynum and Talanoa Hufanga all cashed in at $15 million or more per season, and projected Hawkins as next in line. The franchise tag for a safety in 2026 was valued at $20,758,000.

Instead, DeCosta got him for $5 million a year. Per Spotrac, the deal includes a $3.7 million signing bonus, $5 million guaranteed, and a 2026 cap hit of just $3.15 million. For a top-five graded safety coming off a Super Bowl run, that’s not a contract — that’s a coupon.

Yes, he is the third safety in B’more, not the full-time starter he was in Foxborough. But ESPN’s roster analysis now calls safety Baltimore’s biggest strength, noting Hawkins was an every-down player for the Patriots and that all three of Baltimore’s top safeties played at least 950 snaps in 2025. “Third safety” in this defense is the equivalent of “starter”.

Even if 2025 proves to be Hawkins’ ceiling, $5 million a year for a versatile, turnover-creating veteran is a solid investment. If the breakout 2025 is real? Highway. Robbery.

Verdict: Win DeCosta!

What looked like a rather unglamorous move in March might look a whole lot more glamorous come January. Or dare I say, beyond?
