‘I can defend myself’: Sophie Cunningham’s serious warning after Fever incident

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

WNBA: Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

Sophie Cunningham’s latest viral moment came during a highly contentious matchup between the Indiana Fever and the Phoenix Mercury on June 22. This is after she got into it with former teammate DeWanna Bonner during a heated moment in the game.

It was Caitlin Clark who first received a technical foul after an in-game scuffle with Bonner. Cunningham got involved when she questioned the refs about why Bonner didn’t get a tech. This did not sit well with the Mercury star. Bonner had some choice words for Cunningham, which she responded to by pointing at her ex-Fever teammate without saying anything.

It was at that moment that a new meme was born.

Fever star Sophie Cunningham opens up about DeWanna Bonner incident

Cunningham reflected on her altercation with Bonner in a recent appearance on the “Sons & Daughters” podcast. The 6-foot-1 guard admitted that it was “dumb” but also pointed to the history between the players and the teams.

“Caitlin got a technical, and I wasn’t even speaking to Miss Priss over there,” Cunningham said, referring to Bonner. “It made her mad, and she was like, ‘Don’t you point at me.’ I did not say a word to her. I just pointed. Good thing I got my nails done the day before, so I felt good about myself.

“That meme is literally everywhere. I thought that it would be my mouth that got me in trouble. It was simply just my sass that got me in trouble that time.”

When asked about her emotions in such situations, Cunningham revealed that she doesn’t really get angry.

“No, I’m calm,” she said. “I think basketball is basketball, but again, there’s more to it sometimes.”

“And I don’t think I’m very fearful of anybody. Like, I can defend myself. I’m good.”

It is important to note that Cunningham is a black belt in Taekwondo, an honor she incredibly earned at the age of 6. Don’t let the fun-loving facade fool you. As she warned, Cunningham can definitely defend herself when it comes to it. This is exactly why opponents should take caution in challenging the Fever star.
