Jets Training Camp Observations From the First Two Practices

The first two practices of Jets training camp are complete, giving fans their first extended look at Aaron Glenn in his second year under Darren Mougey’s revamped roster. It is still far too early to draw firm conclusions, especially with the players practicing in shorts and shells, but several encouraging developments have already emerged.

Early camp performances also attract attention from fans following NFL markets through Tooniebet casino, an online betting site offering markets across football, hockey, baseball and other major sports. The more important focus in Florham Park, however, is identifying which early developments can carry over once the pads come on and the competition becomes more physical.

Here are the biggest Jets training camp observations from the first two practices.

The Offense Looks More Comfortable

The offense had the advantage during the opening practice, producing several completions and explosive runs while taking care of the football. The second day started differently, with the defense controlling the early portion of practice before the offense responded later.

That balance is encouraging. A completely one-sided start to camp would raise questions about the group on the losing end. Instead, both sides have enjoyed productive stretches while creating competitive practices.

Geno Smith has looked comfortable directing the offense. He has distributed the ball to his wide receivers, tight ends and running backs while finding success primarily in the short and intermediate passing game. Smith also connected with Garrett Wilson and Adonai Mitchell on multiple tight-window throws during the second practice.

The early chemistry between Smith and his starting receivers is important. Wilson remains the focal point of the passing game, while Mitchell has an opportunity to establish himself as a reliable second option behind Wilson. Their development together will be one of the most important storylines throughout camp.

David Bailey Is Already Creating Problems

No player generated more attention during the second practice than rookie edge rusher David Bailey. He consistently collapsed the pocket, registered a would-be sack against Smith and made an impact against the run.

One of Bailey’s best plays came when he beat Armand Membou into the backfield to disrupt a running play. He also maintained backside containment and stopped a jet sweep involving Omar Cooper Jr. Aaron Glenn praised Bailey’s energy, speed, quickness and willingness to defend the run, although the head coach also acknowledged that the real evaluation will begin when the pads come on.

Bailey also flashed during the opening practice by creating pressure off the edge and forcing Smith into an incompletion. Two strong practices do not guarantee immediate NFL success, but the second overall pick is already demonstrating why the Jets considered him one of the premier players in the draft.

The Jets May A Disruptive Defense

Bailey was not the only defensive lineman to stand out. Jowon Briggs generated multiple interior pressures during the first practice, while Harrison Phillips and David Onyemata helped control the middle early on Day 2.

Kingsley Enagbare also created repeated pressure off the edge and disrupted multiple tight end screens. Chase Wilson, an undrafted rookie linebacker from West Virginia, showed range in coverage and made several plays against the run during the opener.

The early results suggest that Aaron Glenn and defensive coordinator Brian Duker could have several different combinations available along the defensive front.

Breece Hall Remains a Major Part of the Offense

Breece Hall and Braelon Allen both produced explosive runs during the first practice and contributed in the screen game. The running backs encountered more resistance early on Day 2, but Hall, Allen and Isaiah Davis all made plays as the offense improved later in the session. Hall provides the ability to create explosive plays as both a runner and receiver, while Allen gives the Jets a more physical option.

Reich has also shown a willingness to use multiple tight ends and jet sweeps from different positions. First-round pick Kenyon Sadiq has lined up throughout the formation and contributed as a receiver, ball carrier and blocker. He caught a touchdown from Bailey Zappe during the second practice after being used on screens, crossers and jet-sweep action.

Cade Klubnik Is Making an Early Impression

Rookie quarterback Cade Klubnik has been one of the most encouraging players through two practices. He displayed mobility and a willingness to throw downfield during the opener, even though he narrowly missed deep connections with Arian Smith and Isaiah Williams.

Klubnik followed that performance by completing several difficult sideline throws to Mason Taylor, Arian Smith and Jamaal Pritchett during the second practice. Glenn acknowledged the rookie’s performance afterward and praised the leadership Klubnik displayed while overcoming adversity at Clemson.

Klubnik is not here to challenge Smith for the starting job right now, but the competition behind Smith remains important. The Jets invested a fourth-round pick in Klubnik because of his athleticism, upside and experience leading a major college program. His early performance suggests he will have an opportunity to earn the backup role.

Olu Fashanu and Will McDonald Look Different

Two returning players also created attention before the action began. Fashanu and Will McDonald both appear to have added considerable size during the offseason.

The added weight could be particularly important for McDonald, who has always possessed natural pass-rushing ability but has occasionally struggled to set the edge against the run. If he maintained his quickness while adding functional strength, he could become a more complete defender.

Fashanu is entering an important third season at left tackle. His increased size should help him deal with powerful edge rushers as he attempts to establish himself as a dependable long-term protector for Smith.

Jets Training Camp – The Real Evaluations Are Still Ahead

The opening practices have provided several reasons for optimism. Smith looks comfortable, Bailey has been disruptive, Klubnik is making impressive throws, and the offense is experimenting with different personnel packages.

None of that guarantees success when the regular season begins. The players have not practiced in pads, tackling remains limited, and the coaching staff is still installing its systems.

The first two days have nevertheless offered an encouraging introduction. The next stage of camp will show whether these early standouts can maintain their production when the practices become more physical and the competition intensifies.
