Jets Training Camp Report: David Bailey Steals the Show on Day 2
The second practice of Jets training camp had a much different feel than the opener. The defense came out strong early before the offense settled in and answered later in the session, making for a competitive two-hour practice. JetNation had KRL and Shane in attendance, taking in all the action live.
Here are KRL’s observations from Day 2.
Jets Training Camp General Notes
- Players in shorts & shells; practice ran 2 hours.
- Gee Scott (WR) went down with a non-contact injury during drills.
- For the second day in a row, an interesting coaching dynamic is showing up on the offensive side of the ball. Frank Reich oversees the offense and calls the plays, but he’s “empowering” the younger coaches to install the offense. Particularly visible are Sean Ryan (Passing Game Coordinator) and Junior Taylor (Assistant WR Coach).
- The defense enforced their will early in practice, but the offense bounced back later. So it was a fairly even day.
Special Teams Notes
- The kickers made their debuts today, and both were accurate.
- Cade York was 6/6, and Jason Sanders was 5/6.
- The attempts were from 30, 35, 40, 42, 45 and 47 yards. Sanders missed from 47 on his final kick.
- In my opinion, watch York. His leg really looked explosive, with his kicks going through the top of the uprights. Which means all of his kicks would’ve been good from a longer distance.
Defense Notes
- Harrison Phillips and David Onyemata anchored the middle early in practice and stuffed the running game. They also compressed the pocket in the passing game and let the edges eat.
- Kingsley Enagbare had an impressive day as he brought pressure off the edge multiple times and blew up TE screens.
- David Bailey was all over the field today. He collapsed the pocket multiple times, had a “sack” of Geno Smith, and showed out in the run game. He blew up a running play by beating his man (Armand Membou) into the backfield, and he blew up a “jet sweep” (Omar Cooper) as he kept containment on the backside of the run.
- Nice to see the disappearance of the vanilla defense run by Steve Wilks.
Offense Notes
- Tons of multiple TE formations were deployed and a lot of “jet sweeps” from different positions.
- Good days from the starting WRs (Garrett Wilson & Adonai Mitchell), showing excellent chemistry with Geno Smith and making multiple tight-window catches.
- Smith and Omar Cooper need to work on their chemistry. There was a miss on a 20-plus-yard seam route that should’ve been a big gain.
- Kenyon Sadiq was deployed all over the field and made plays all day, catching screens, crossers, being used in “jet sweeps” and catching a TD from Bailey Zappe.
- After a rough early start, the RBs (Breece Hall, Braelon Allen & Isaiah Davis) made plays later in practice.
QB Notes
- As noted before, a good day from Geno Smith as he made multiple tight-window sideline throws to Wilson & Mitchell.
- Cade Klubnik replicated Smith’s day by making multiple tight-window sideline throws. His went to Mason Taylor, Arian Smith and Jamaal Pritchett. He doesn’t look like a rookie so far.
Standouts
- David Bailey
- Kingsley Enagbare
- Geno Smith
- Garrett Wilson & Adonai Mitchell
- Kenyon Sadiq
- Cade Klubnik
