BREAKING: Chicago White Sox acquire veteran outfielder to help bolster playoff run

The Chicago White Sox have won five of their last seven games as September and the postseason nears. Sitting at 72-64, the Sox hold a 3.5-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians, who are a red-hot 8-2 in their last 10 games and getting closer with each victory.

With September looming, rosters will expand across the entirety of Major League Baseball, and the White Sox have wasted no time when it comes to adding a much-needed veteran in the locker room.

Today, the Sox made a small roster move as they decided to trade for veteran outfielder Tommy Pham. Pham signed a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies in July and has been on a handful of teams thus far in the season.

Trade news: The Chicago White Sox are acquiring outfielder Tommy Pham from the Philadelphia Phillies, sources tell ESPN. Pham is expected to join the White Sox when rosters expand Sept. 1. The 38-year-old rejoins the Sox after spending parts of 2026 with the Mets, O’s and Phils.

This will be Pham’s fourth team of the season, and his second stint with the Chicago White Sox during his career. Pham has been a very good playoff performer in his career, hitting .315 over 37 career games. He last played in the postseason with the Kansas City Royals in 2024.

Funny enough, this is the second trade this year that the two clubs have made. The Phillies acquired outfielder Derek Hill from the White Sox in June for some international pool cash and a few prospects.

The Chicago White Sox have enjoyed a fun and unexpected winning season thus far. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions for fans, but with about a month left to play, you couldn’t ask for the club to be in a better position. They’ve hit plenty of home runs and watched some young talent turn into potential long-term pieces.

Before the season began, the White Sox were the youngest team in baseball, as they had the lowest average age across the entire league. Luckily, a surprise playoff push has made the front office go out and grab veteran talent like Luis Castillo and now Tommy Pham. They now sit 11th in the youth rankings, a massive jump from Spring Training.

Pham won’t break the home run record or steal bases as he used to in St. Louis, but he adds something that can’t be overlooked on a young playoff roster. Obviously, the Sox still need to finish September strong to play in October, but this move will surely encourage fans and the team, as you can never have enough veteran outfielders.
