Chicago Bears: Ben Johnson handed over play-calling duties against Browns
The Chicago Bears offense looked a little out of rhythm in their first two drives, which ended with punts after going three and out against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.
The Bears scored 10 points in the second quarter, going into halftime tied 10-10.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson made a change before the second half, handing over play-calling duties to assistant head coach/wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El for the game’s final 30 minutes.
Randle El didn’t do too badly in his debut. The Bears scored 24 points and only punted twice in the second half of a 34-10 victory over the Browns in front of 43,537 fans at Soldier Field.
During his postgame news conference, Johnson said the Bears offense rallied around Randle El. Johnson thinks Saturday was a great opportunity for Randle El.

Johnson suggested he might give opportunities to other coaches on the staff to call plays during the preseason.
“I think we might take a look at a couple of guys here during the preseason,” Johnson said. “Last year, (Ravens Offensive Coordinator) Declan (Doyle) had an opportunity in one of those games to do the second half. So, I wanted El to get that chance, and he wanted it too. I think he’s an outstanding coach, and I think sometimes when you’re put in certain position rooms, you kind of get labeled one thing or another.
“Here’s the thing about El; I think he’s got a chance to be an offensive coordinator in this league. I think he’s got a chance to be a head coach in this league. I think he would do a phenomenal job in both those respects, and I don’t know if he gets that type of credit around the league right now. So, it’s a good opportunity for him to get some recognition.”
If the Bears wind up breaking the record for most points scored in a season, Randle El and offensive coordinator Press Taylor may get some extra looks in the next hiring cycle.
The Bears won the total yards battle 430-314 on Saturday. Chicago averaged 6.8 yards per play.
It’s clear that the passing game looks more polished than the running game at this point. The Bears had 348 passing yards, but only gained 82 yards on the ground, averaging just 3.9 yards per rush without D’Andre Swift or Kyle Monangai playing.
