Chicago Cubs 2026 deadline loss is breaking out in the majors

Chicago Cubs, Cubs News, Brett Bateman

To many Chicago Cubs fans delights, the front office completely revamped their big league pitching staff before this year’s August 3 trade deadline. Joining the organization was Kevin Gausman, Ryan Zeferjahn, Clay Holmes, and Braxton Garrett. In order to complete this overhaul, they parted ways with outfielder Brett Bateman, shortstop Ty Southisene, catcher Moises Ballesteros, right-hander Mason McGwire, third baseman Jonathon Long, right-hander Jace Beck, and shortstop Jefferson Rojas.

Among this group, Bateman was one of the players sent to the Toronto Blue Jays for Gausman. At the time of the deal, Bateman had been enjoying a breakout campaign in Triple-A, slashing .312/.430/.421 with nearly as many walks (60) as strikeouts (66). He also had 20 stolen bases to his name and was an established rangy outfielder thanks to his speed.

Since the trade, Bateman has been called up to the majors by the Blue Jays and has enjoyed a great first week in the show.

On Aug. 7, Bateman’s dream of reaching the major leagues became a reality. The 24-year-old collected a hit in two at-bats while drawing two walks in his MLB debut. After going hitless the following day, Bateman has since put together a five-game hitting streak, including three multi-hit performances.

For Toronto, the early returns on acquiring Bateman look promising. Giving him an opportunity in the big leagues was a smart move, especially with the 24-year-old set to become Rule 5 Draft eligible this offseason. Given the season he was having in the minors, Bateman was almost certain to draw attention from other teams if left unprotected.

His impending Rule 5 eligibility may have played a role in Chicago’s decision to move on from him, but with Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki both set to become free agents this winter, there could have been a path for Bateman to eventually reach the Cubs’ big league roster. Now, the hope for Chicago is that the front office’s decision to prioritize pitching and make a push to win in 2026 pays off this postseason, rather than leaving the club to regret sacrificing potential pieces for 2027.
