Chicago Cubs likely will not trade 2 coveted bats amid pitching needs

The Chicago Cubs are 63-48 on the season as the MLB trade deadline draws closer and closer. It is well-known around the baseball world that Chicago is desperately looking to improve their pitching depth. All year long, the Cubs have been dealt injury after injury to their pitching staff, both starters and relievers.

Unfortunately, Chicago’s farm system was not considered good enough for them to be serious contenders for two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal. He, instead, was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Additionally, the Cubs missed out on a more realistic target, two-time All-Star Freddy Peralta, who was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday afternoon.

The Chicago Cubs will not trade Seiya Suzuki or Carson Kelly

As badly as the Cubs need pitching, though, The Athletic reports that Chicago is not willing to give up two of their most coveted hitters that were rumored to be desired by other teams: Carson Kelly and Seiya Suzuki.

Per the report:

“The supply of catchers and right-handed hitters, on the other hand, is minimal, creating the potential for interest in catcher Carson Kelly and right fielder Seiya Suzuki.

“Both, however, are highly unlikely to be dealt, said a source who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe ongoing deliberations.

“Suzuki, the Cubs’ No. 2 hitter, is probably too valuable to move. The Cubs might have envisioned a Michael Conforto-Matt Shaw platoon in right without him, but Shaw has been on the injured list since June 29 with a sprained left wrist.

“Kelly, too, is part of the Cubs’ fabric, and trading him would affect the Cubs’ pitching staff and clubhouse morale.”

It is probably a good thing that the Cubs have no intention of trading either. Both are important to the offense and, as seen above, clubhouse chemistry.

That being said, because their farm system lacks the quality of prospects of other contenders, they may not get the level of pitcher(s) that they are searching for.
