WNBA: New York Liberty at Chicago Sky

DiJonai Carrington’s Flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham on Saturday continues to draw a lot of attention. The veteran guard has received both criticism and support, particularly on social media, with fans divided about the play. Many have also defended her, including Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh.

The referees ejected Carrington late in the first quarter for contacting Cunningham’s head during a fast break. She finished with eight points and the Sky ultimately lost 90-86. Natasha Cloud and Rachel Banham led the way with 17 points each but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory.

The Fever, on the other hand, were led by Kelsey Mitchell’s 27 points and five rebounds. Caitlin Clark backed her with 26 points and 11 assists, while Aliyah Boston added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Cunningham scored only three points and grabbed one rebound.

Marsh came to Carrington’s defense, stressing that he believes she made a play for the ball. While many may not agree with him, he also highlighted the former Baylor star’s playing style.

“I think the intent was to make an attempt at the ball, and that’s how she plays,” Marsh said. “That’s who she is. She’s passionate, hard nosed, and it’s unfortunate that’s what happened. I don’t think that’s what her intent was.”

Chicago returned to action on Monday against the Seattle Storm at Climate Pledge Arena. Marsh, Carrington and Co. failed to get back on track, losing 97-88. The 28-year-old recorded 26 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Meanwhile, Indiana will face the New York Liberty on Tuesday. Cunningham looks to contribute better numbers and help lead the team to its second consecutive victory. The Fever sit fourth in the standings with a 20-12 record and will play the second game of their two-game homestand on Thursday versus the Dallas Wings.
