Jets Depth Chart – Improved Depth Emerging in Training Camp
One of the more encouraging developments with the Jets depth chart this summer has been the improved depth across the roster. After years of watching injuries expose major holes at key positions, there are signs that this team may finally have more capable options behind the starters.
Jets Training camp will only tell us so much, but several players are making strong cases for bigger roles. Here’s a position-by-position look at some of the Jets depth that has stood out so far.
Now that is out of the way:
Jets Depth Chart Thoughts
- OL: Max Mitchell ‘seems’ to have taken a step forward, and is probably the first in at Tackle or Guard. ** I do think the Jets need to add better depth at Center so they can keep Tippmann/Parham at Guard in the event Myers gets hurt
- TE: Jeremy Ruckert developed as a blocker last year and Jelani Woods is reminding people of the size/skills that made him a 3rd rounder. Both might carve specialized roles that suit their strengths (Eg, Woods in RZ)
- WR: Isaiah Williams is proving he can play football. We need guys who can get open 1:1 when others are doubled, and I’m surprised at how many deep balls he’s caught in camp (thought he profiles better in the slot). Might have a bigger role than most of us imagined
- DL: Harrison Phillips and Darrell Jackson are a good combo of proven vet & promising rookie. Love the size & strength, after years of watching our backups gutted up the middle
- Edge: Ossai and Enagbare have been quality rotation players for a number of years. Last years’s depth was embarrasing
- LB: Mykal Walker is less proven than many on this list but he was arguably our best LB down the stretch last season and has made big plays this camp
- Slot CB: Brownlee has had a good camp in coverage, to go along with his strong run defense. Projects as a serviceable + backup who still has room to improve
- Outside CB: Nashon Wright was credited with 10 turnovers last year in an eventual starting role with the Bears. Not a great cover CB but a guy who has built a reputation as a playmaker
- Safety: My bet is that Belton wins the SS job, with Moore as a 3rd Safety in certain defensive sets that play to his in the box strengths. Cisco adds ‘decent’ depth and a lot of starting experience behind Fitzpatrick
I’d call this a big step in the right direction after years of watching JD miss on mid and later round depth picks.
