The NY Jets were back on the practice field Wednesday morning in Florham Park for a shorter session that ran from approximately 8:30 a.m. until a few minutes after 10. Aaron Glenn described the practice as “quick and fast,” with the defense getting off to a strong start before the offense responded during an extended red-zone period. Cade Klubnik received plenty of work, including first-team reps, and had a very good day. Kicker Cade York also provided one of the highlights of practice, going 5-for-5 and drilling a 60-yard field goal that had plenty of distance to spare. Here is our full Jets Camp report for Tuesday, August 19th.

General Notes – NY Jets Training Camp

  • Practice started at approximately 8:30 a.m. and ended a few minutes after 10am.
  • Fans were in attendance, although capacity remains limited in the bleachers.
  • Kenyon Sadiq continued his rehab work and spent time on the bike.
  • Mory Bamba was also working on the side.
  • Jarvis Brownlee came onto the field a little late, after initially being inside.
  • Glenn said T’Vondre Sweat, Joseph Ossai and Kiko Mauigoa were on management plans Wednesday. Glenn noted that Mauigoa has taken as many reps as anyone during camp, so the Jets wanted to reduce his workload.
  • Tim Patrick and David Onyemata received veteran rest days.
  • Glenn’s recap is what I observed; he said the defense started practice with plenty of energy before the offense picked things up when the Jets moved into the red zone.

Offense

  • Omar Cooper opened 11-on-11 in the slot.
  • The Jets had some early success running the football, including consecutive productive runs by Kene Nwangwu behind good blocking up front.
  • Geno Smith had a light workload. He threw only a handful of passes during the team periods as the Jets appeared to be managing his reps.
  • On an attempt to Garrett Wilson on a long out route, Dane Belton made an excellent play to break up the pass.
  • The reduced workload for Geno created additional opportunities for Cade Klubnik, including reps with the first-team offense.

Cade Klubnik Has a Strong Practice

Klubnik took advantage of the additional work Wednesday. The rookie looked comfortable running the offense and continued to show the accuracy that has stood out at different points throughout camp. During the red-zone period, Klubnik rolled out and connected with Jelani Woods for a touchdown.

On the next play, Klubnik found Kene Nwangwu on a short pass, and Nwangwu walked into the end zone for another touchdown.

Klubnik also completed passes to Arian Smith and Deuce Trayanum during team work. The most encouraging part continues to be how comfortable he looks. He’s a rookie, and there will be mistakes, but he hasn’t looked overwhelmed by the additional responsibility or by working with the starters.

After practice, Glenn said Klubnik is getting “better and better” with each practice. Wednesday was another step in that direction.

Defense Starts Fast

Glenn thought the defense controlled the early portion of practice before the offense responded in the red zone.

  • Nate Lynn generated good pressure off the edge during team work.
  • Darrell Jackson Jr. stopped a Klubnik scramble at the line of scrimmage.
  • Dane Belton made an excellent pass breakup on Geno’s attempt to Garrett Wilson.
  • Jarvis Brownlee recorded a sack during the red-zone period with Geno at quarterback.
  • Will McDonald also generated pressure on the play.

The defensive emphasis remains creating disruption and turnovers. Glenn has repeatedly stressed getting hands on the football, and Wednesday’s early work reflected the type of aggressive defense he is trying to build.

Red Zone

After the defense had the better of the early portion of practice, the offense responded when the Jets moved into approximately 15 red-zone reps.

Klubnik was responsible for two of the better plays, throwing touchdowns to Jelani Woods and Kene Nwangwu.

Brownlee also made his presence felt for the defense with a sack, while McDonald generated pressure.

That back-and-forth was essentially how Glenn described the practice afterward: the defense started fast, and the offense answered once the team moved into the red zone.

Field Goals

Cade York was the better kicker on Wednesday and was perfect on the day.

  • Cade York: 5 of 5
  • Good from 35, 45, 50, 55 and 60 yards.
  • The 60-yard field goal was right down the middle and had significant distance to spare. From my vantage point, it appeared it would have been good from approximately 65 to 67 yards.

Jason Sanders kicked later, with his five attempts coming together at the end of practice rather than alternating with York.

  • Jason Sanders: 4 of 5
  • Sanders missed his fourth attempt, from 55 yards.

York and Sanders have traded good days throughout camp, but Wednesday belonged to York.

Special Teams

  • Austin McNamara handled the punting work, including punts backed up near his own end zone.
  • Isaiah Williams was among those returning punts.
  • McNamara had one punt that he angled toward the sideline but only traveled approximately 30 yards.
  • Special teams coordinator Chris Banjo was once again extremely vocal and positive throughout the period, repeatedly emphasizing that he wanted the unit to be clean.
  • The Jets also worked with their second-team punt coverage unit.
  • With no second punter on the roster, McNamara handled all of the punting reps.

Geno Smith

This wasn’t really a day to evaluate Geno Smith. His workload was noticeably lighter, and he threw only a few passes during the team periods while Klubnik received additional work with the starters.

Glenn indicated afterward that there is still some soreness, but said the injury isn’t limiting Smith. Glenn also said the current plan is for Geno to play Friday night, although he cautioned that plans can change.

Standouts

  • Cade Klubnik
  • Cade York
  • Jarvis Brownlee
  • Dane Belton

Final Thoughts

Wednesday’s practice followed the script Aaron Glenn wants to see. The defense came out fast and controlled the early portion of practice. When the Jets transitioned into red-zone work, the offense responded.

Cade Klubnik was the biggest offensive story. With Geno Smith on a lighter workload, the rookie received additional opportunities with the starters and looked comfortable. His two red-zone touchdown passes highlighted another encouraging day, and Glenn’s assessment that Klubnik continues to improve matched what I saw on the field.

Cade York had an impressive day of his own. He was perfect on five field-goal attempts, including a 60-yarder that cleared with room to spare.

The Jets now turn their attention toward Friday night’s preseason game, where Klubnik should get another opportunity to build on what has been an encouraging training camp.
