OTL: After Solid Performance Against Eagles, the Lane (Hype) Train Rolls On

The Ja’Kobi Lane hype train does not show signs of slowing down anytime soon.

The rookie wide receiver continued his impressive run in Baltimore’s preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, recording 38 yards and a touchdown on three catches in his NFL debut.

Lane’s first NFL touchdown was also the first of the Ravens’ 2026 preseason. Undrafted rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano found the 22-year-old pass-catcher across the middle for a 16-yard score to put Baltimore in front 7-0 early in the second quarter.

Lane, who recorded 18 offensive snaps in his preseason debut, would not log another catch after reaching the end zone in the second quarter. Baltimore went on to topple the Eagles 24-7, marking the franchise’s fourth consecutive preseason win after defeating the Colts, Cowboys and Commanders a year ago.

Recapping Preseason Game 1 vs. Philadelphia

He was grad second among Ravens pass-catchers in the game by Pro Football Focus (76.0 offensive grade), placing behind rookie tight end Matthew Hibner, who finished his preseason debut with 61 yards on five catches and a 92.6 offensive grade.

For the former USC standout, the Ravens’ preseason opener delivers yet another encouraging sign amid his impressive summer.

Lane has turned heads in training camp, snagging contested catch after contested catch while proving himself a reliable young target for two-time MVP Lamar Jackson.

Jackson expressed high praise for the rookie receiver during Baltimore’s Saturday night contest against Philadelphia.

“His aggressiveness to go get the ball,” he said to CBS Sports sideline reporter Evan Washburn when asked about his favorite traits from Lane’s skill set. “He’s attacking the ball, he’s not really letting the ball just come to him.”

“Big hands, tough receiver. That’s what we need,” Jackson added.

The star quarterback is not alone in his applause for Lane. Fellow rookie wide receiver Elijah Sarratt also recently had some positive things to say about his teammate during training camp.

“He’s effortlessly good,” Sarratt said at camp. “He just goes out there and makes plays. He’s going to be a great receiver.”

Lane, the 80th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, is coming off a season with the Trojans in which he posted 745 yards and four touchdowns on 49 receptions. His 15.3 yards per catch ranked sixth among Big Ten wide receivers last season (min. 50 targets).

The third-round rookie appears poised to carve out a significant role in Baltimore’s new-look offense under offensive coordinator Declan Doyle amid the franchise’s historic failure to develop young wide receivers.

“Jak’ is working extremely hard to learn all of it, and I am really happy with that progress,” Doyle said to reporters at training camp.

After a flashy training camp and a touchdown performance in his first ever NFL contest, Lane is set to carry a lot of responsibility in Baltimore’s passing attack, in which he will join the likes of Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman and Mark Andrews.

Here comes the Lane Train.
