Chicago Bears gain $17 million in cap space after trio of contract restructures

The Chicago Bears are putting the finishing touches on their roster as they prepare for the 2026 season. Now, the franchise will have some extra money to work with.

The Bears have restructured the contracts of guard Joe Thuney, defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo and linebacker TJ Edwards, via Field Yates. Those three moves freed up $17 million in cap space for Chicago.

While the Bears have some extra flexibility, they still have just over $4.5 million to work with, via Spotrac. These moves could’ve simply been made to give Chicago operating costs for the start of the season.

At the same time though, rumors will begin to buzz due to the $17 million figure. Perhaps the franchise does have a big move in the works. For now though, the Bears just needed to get cap compliant.

All three players who had their contracts restructured will play crucial roles for the franchise. Thuney is the leader of the offensive line while Edwards will fill a similar role on defense. Odeyingbo is looking to prove he can be a staple of the pass rush moving forward.

The Bears are evaluating all aspects of their roster. If they feel they’re seriously lacking in one department, perhaps Chicago finds a way to free up even more cap space.

Chicago Bears fans want Ryan Poles to cook

From the minute the trio of restructures were announced, fans began throwing theories around. From a Maxx Crosby trade to Josh Sweat, the internet seems convinced general manager Ryan Poles is ready to cook.

While the Bears freed up $17 million in space, that doesn’t necessarily mean they have $17 million to work with. Beyond the money, a significant pass rusher trade is going to take quite the investment. So far, Chicago has been reluctant.

But if the trade deadline rolls around and the Bears are struggling to put up sacks, the calls for a deal will only get louder. Perhaps by then Poles will find a way to make that happen within the cap.
