Chicago Bears injury report isn’t good for QB situation

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (18) and quarterback Tyson Bagent (17) enter the field before the game against the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field.

The Chicago Bears revealed their first injury report of the season on Wednesday as they prepare to play the Carolina Panthers for Week 1 on Sunday.

The Bears did not practice on Wednesday, so the three named on the report were an approximation.

Per the Bears, backup quarterback Tyson Bagent was listed as a non-participant due to a back injury. Rome Odunze was listed as a limited participant due to a calf issue. (Odunze missed Tuesday’s practice.) Left tackle Ozzy Trapilo was listed as a limited participant due to a knee injury.

It was reported earlier in the preseason that Bagent suffered a hamstring injury before the Bears were set to play the Cleveland Browns. Bagent returned to play against the Tennessee Titans in the Bears’ final preseason outing.

Bagent made a 97-yard connection with rookie receiver Zavion Thomas against the Titans. Bagent was happy with the way he and the offense played against Tennessee.

“I think that was the first play in the NFL for Zavion Thomas, greatest start in NFL history! Huge confidence boost,” Bagent said, via USA Today. “Coming off the first preseason game, the focal point for myself was to not go three-and-out two consecutive times.

“Being able to get off to a good start, execute well, and overcome penalties early on showed we were moving in the right direction.”

It’s unclear if Bagent will be available to back up Caleb Williams against the Panthers. The Bears have veteran quarterback Case Keenum on the 53-man roster. The Bears released Miller Moss after training camp and have not added him to the practice squad.

It wasn’t too surprising to see Trapilo as a limited participant. Bears head coach Ben Johnson named Braxton Jones as the starting left tackle as Trapilo works his way back from injury.

The Bears are hopeful Odunze will be able to play against the Panthers on Sunday.
