Chicago Bears lineman’s hot seat cools off despite Week 2 struggles

Ben Johnson

The Chicago Bears as a team struggled in Week 2. While there were some highlights, it’s hard to take many positives away from a 9-3 loss.

Amongst the biggest problems were penalties across the offensive line. The Bears were flagged eight times, losing 58 yards. Chicago cost themselves numerous drives, at one point taking themselves out of field goal range in a three-point game.

Center Garrett Bradbury was at the heart of those miscues, getting called twice for holding and twice for false start. With the Bears using a second-round pick on fellow center Logan Jones, calls for a switch are already getting louder.

But it is still just Week 3 of the season. The Bears are neither thinking drastically nor ready to hit the panic button.

Chicago Bears trust Garrett Bradbury

Head coach Ben Johnson has proven he isn’t afraid to make changes when necessary. He switched out Braxton Jones at left tackle against the Vikings. But the Bears have been high on Bradbury all offseason. He was an immediate target when Drew Dalman retired. They aren’t ready to just give up on that plan.

Furthermore, the penalties accrued aren’t characteristic of the center. Yes Bradbury must clean things up, but he isn’t a penalty prone player, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

“Bradbury had a rough game against the Vikings, but he’s not in jeopardy of losing his spot after a game that was a slog for most of the offensive players. What was alarming was two false starts and two holding calls (one of which was negated by an offsetting penalty by the Vikings),” Biggs wrote. “That hasn’t been a problem for the veteran. Over the previous four seasons, including 50 starts, Bradbury was called for five false starts and two holds. So he hasn’t been a penalty-prone player. He needs to clean that up this week.”

Bradbury will now have quite the test in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles. If he can hold his own, the center will be viewed much more favorably moving forward.
