Chicago Bears tight end’s initial reaction to near touchdown pass drop

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Down by three, the Chicago Bears drove the ball all the way to the Minnesota Vikings’ 17-yard line. Quarterback Caleb Williams then lofted a pass to tight end Sam Roush that had touchdown potential written all over it.

While Roush initially seemed to make the catch, he dropped the ball after being clocked by two Vikings defenders. The Bears would go on to have their field goal attempt blocked that drive.

The tight end did have to take on a sandwich of hits. Minnesota ultimately made a good play. But the Bears were in a crucial situation. If Roush held onto the ball, Chicago may be 2-0. And while hindsight is 20/20 Williams wouldn’t have had to run on the crucial play he suffered his hamstring injury on.

The Bears are certainly watching the tape to see where things went wrong. Roush is doing some review himself.

Already, Roush was able to identify his error on the play. It won’t make the miscue any better in the moment, but the tight end is at least aware of what he must do moving forward, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

“I need to watch on film,” Roush said. “I caught it. As I am turning to tuck it, I’ve got to be faster with the tuck. That’s what happened.”

The Bears have high hopes for Roush. Being in on that play is a testament to how head coach Ben Johnson already feels about him. But Chicago has two other more than capable tight ends on their roster in Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet. Fans will continue to wonder why they weren’t in that situation.

Roush is still in the early stages of his NFL tenure. He has plenty of things to learn. Next time he’s on the gridiron, the tight end will look to put some positive film out there.
